Casper Ruud made history by defeating Tomas Machac in the final, 7-5, 6-3. This made him the first and only player to win three titles at the ATP Geneva Open tournament.
In the 6th May seeding, he was seeded second behind Novak Djokovic who was also seeded as a wildcard, Behind him were top seeded players like Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Sebastián Báez.
Before the tournament started, notable players like Tommy Paul, Jirí Lehecka, and Nicolás Jarry withdrew from the tournament. Together with Djokovic, Andy Murray and Denis Shapovalov were seeded as wildcards.
Casper Ruud won €88,125 and 250 ATP ranking points from a prize pool of €562,815.
Casper Ruud Survives Gritty Tournament To The Final
Ranked 6th in the world, Casper Ruud entered into the 2024 ATP Geneva Open as the second seed. He got a bye to the second round, where he overcame the qualifier, Sebastian Ofner, in a tightly contested three-set encounter with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.
It qualified him to the quarterfinals where he faced another tough test against 5th seed Sebastián Báez. Ruud came from a set down to overturn Báez’s lead, to win 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.
His hunt for his third Geneva trophy took him to the a semifinal clash with Flavio Cobolli where a spirited performance overturned another first set deficit to win 6-1, 1-6, 6-7.
Casper Ruud Wins A Hard-fought First Set
Casper Ruud clinched a hard-fought, closely contested 7-5 victory over Tomas Machac in the opening set of the 2024 ATP Geneva Open final. Ruud’s serving was superior.
He struck two aces without hitting a single, double fault all set compared to Machac, who hit one ace and struggled with up to three double faults. Both of them attacked each other at the net, with both of them winning five net points each.
Machac’s 10 winners couldn’t eclipse his 15 unforced errors. That’s where Ruud demonstrated superiority, recording 11 winners and just four unforced errors. His game was more controlled than Machac’s.
Casper Ruud was also better in both his first serve points won, and his first serve return points won. Casper Ruud faced one breakpoint all set, while Tomas Machac faced two breakpoints.
Neither saved a breakpoint, while both converted all the breakpoints they created all through the set, with Ruud converting two at the end to win the set.
Ruud’s Composure Downs Machac’s Resilience
The second set of the 2024 ATP Geneva Open final was as intense as the first, but Casper Ruud stamped his victory by showing his dominance. With a single breakpoint converted at the beginning, he sealed a 6-3 victory over Tomas Machac.
In this set, Machac displayed strong serving, correcting his first set errors by delivering two aces and no double faults. Ruud maintained his consistency with no double faults.
Machac proved more aggressive at the net, converting 10 net points. The second set was a battle of who demonstrated better shot-making skills. Both players smashed 15 winners past each other while keeping their unforced errors limited to three each.
Ruud stood out with his first-serve efficiency. The 20 points he won on his first serve eclipsed Machac’s 12. Ruud also capitalized on the breakpoint opportunity he got at the beginning of the set to stay in the lead till the end.
Aside from the breakpoint Machac failed to save, Machac showed resilience all through the set, but Ruud stayed composed all through the set to keep him on track for victory.
Note:
Novak Djokovic has never won a Geneva Open title. With the French Open main draws close by, Carlos Alcaraz is still recuperating from his injury. Raphael Nadal is also set to be given a tough opponent in the French Open draw.
