At first glance, you might think we’re talking about Jimmy Flick here just for wishful thinking. After all, this was an MMA fighter who called it quits four years ago. Yet he’s been back recently, and here we’re saying he may have a shot at UFC title gold. Come on….
Au contraire…. The spitfire known as the “Brick” certainly has a lot going for him despite adversity. And he’s not exactly the ‘biggest’ juggernaut of the UFC, but since we’re talking about the flyweight division, rest assured: Jimmy Flick measures up well. And what makes a big difference is tenacity. A drive to win. Hope.
And, of course, these three things may make the most difference in his journey to the top of the UFC mountain.
Starting With the Fact That Jimmy Flick Is a True Underdog
Not just any underdog. But an underdog that thrives to be one! When asked about the odds that get stacked against Jimmy Flick, he had this to say:
“Oh, it motivates me more…. I mean, I feel like if you’re a huge favorite, it’s harder to get the motivation, because you already feel everybody’s picking you and everything. I’ve been an underdog my whole life…. So make me the underdog. I love it. I enjoy it, and I just want to prove them wrong and make more people money!”
His current situation at a second UFC run, too, qualifies Jimmy Flick as underdog status since he lost his first two bouts back to back. Not particularly motivating after coming back to the octagon. Yet guess what happened:
He won by submission at UFC 297. Against the veteran Malcolm Gordon.
It was the exact push the “Brick” needed to keep going, and it led to him officially securing his UFC contract from here on out. I call that major motivation as he gets closer and closer to the UFC summit.
Secondly, Let’s Make This Clear: He’s a Submission Specialist
And those guys know their game well. Unless there’s still some training to be had.
The thing about submissions is that you get the best possible effect for the most efficient amount of effort. Get a good eye on the situation, pick your shots, set it upright, and before you know it, you’re choking the guy out. Not hard.
The hard part is getting it locked in.
In comparison, though, strikers and pounders have to work perhaps a little harder to get that knockout, but that’s in their blood. They want to burn the blood in their veins for the win. But submission specialists? They’re assassins. They want that one clean shot. And I don’t mean a punch or kick to knock them down either.
All they need is an opening. They’re crafty. They play chess on the battlefield of MMA. And they win hard and fast! That’s Jimmy Flick to a tee.
Lastly, His Very Own Patented Submission Hold, the “Von Flick” Does the Job
Jimmy Flick himself stated that it’s his favorite chokehold, hands down, 100%. And the fact remains: this cobra of a man got four wins on it!
So what is the “Von Flick”? According to Jimmy, he called it that given the versatility behind the choke, allowing him to even lock it from the bottom. Think of it as a submission hold with literally no way out. If the opponent switches positioning to try and get out, Jimmy just readjusts and holds it from the other angle.
More versatile than a guillotine or triangle — yet just as simple as an armbar.
Jimmy Flick Just Faced Nate Maness
And while he did lose to the iron-skinned Maness (ain’t no thang, Brick, bounce back), the true underdog still has a shot to keep things going. MMA fighters will win and lose. What keeps those fighters going is the desire and will to win that next fight. And the next one. And the next one. It’s the definition of what it means to have the “heart of a champion.”
