Terzic’s departure means yet another big decision for Dortmund family at large , which has gaps to fill in its squad and Champions League income to spend.  The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in the 2023 championship and reached the 2024 Champions League final, asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion. The 41-year-old tactician won the DFB Pokal with the German outfit back in 2021 and also guided Dortmund to second place behind Bayern Munich in 2023 over two spells.

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic has left the club by mutual agreement of the sensational of leaving the club. Terzic said he wanted Dortmund to start a “new era” with a new coach. Terzic’s last game in charge was the 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final at London’s Wembley Stadium on June 1. His current contract was due to expire next summer but he will now leave the club with immediate effect. The German replaced Marco Rose as head coach of Dortmund in 2022, signing a three-year contract through to 2025.

Why the manager stepped down 

 

Dortmund pulled off something special by reaching the Champions League final under Terzic. Even if the final score resulted in a defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley, it’s a significant club achievment The German club said they agreed to Terzic’s request following “a joint discussion”, signaling the end of a significant era at the club. Terzic’s tenure at Dortmund has been marked by significant highs, including a German Cup victory and the memorable Champions League journey, but also by stark lows, such as this season’s fifth-place Bundesliga finish – their worst in nine years.

After guiding the Bundesliga team to the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid, he stepped down as manager. The German manager has been linked with an eye on the Premier League side, with several clubs showing some interest in him. Manchester United had been looking at the 41-year-old to take over; however, they decided to keep Erik ten Hag at the helm of the club for his third season at Old Trafford. The other club reportedly showing interest is Leicester City, who are looking to replace Enzo Maresca following his move to Chelsea. Terzic wants to depart for a new challenge; he could find joy in the Premier League.

Shortly after Terzic announced that he was stepping down, reports also suggested that Hummels would leave the club. The coach asked the German giants to terminate his contract “immediately,”  and the Bundesliga side acquiesced. The Bild states BVB is closing in on former player Sahin, and Sven Bender could become his assistant. Former Turkish international Sahin, who made 274 appearances for Dortmund over three spells with the club, managed Turkish side Antalyaspor between October 2021 and December 2023, before he and Bender became Terzic’s assistant managers at BVB.
