2024 Stuttgart Open: Nakashima And Home Favorite Produce Magic To Qualify For Quarterfinals

The Stuttgart Open second round continued today with some of the top seeds in contention. With 250 points up for grabs, Jan-Lennard Struff was paired in a Round of 16 clash with Arthur Rinderknech. The unseeded Brandon Nakashima, who has clashed with and defeated fellow American, Christopher Eubanks, in the first round stage, was paired with Richard Gasquet.

Brandon Nakashima is looking to win his second ATP tour-level singles title since the San Diego Open in 2022. The 34-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff is also chasing his second career singles title since the Bavarian Championships earlier in the year.

The first set of Jan-Lennard Struff’s Stuttgart Open clash with Arthur Rinderknech was largely evenly matched. Both players dominated their serves, with Rinderknech and Struff scoring similar numbers on their first and second serves.

Struff did better on the return, mounting pressure on Rinderknech’s serve, eventually producing five breakpoint opportunities. He stole one of them to win the set 6-4. Struff had better dominance at the net, scoring three more points than Rinderknech, with eight more winners.

The second set of the Stuttgart Open clash was more of the same for both players, but this time, Rinderknech managed to save all three breakpoints he faced from Struff. He ended up dragging the German to a tiebreak which the German won to love.

The 37-year-old Richard Gasquet is ranked at No. 116 in the world. Brandon Nakashima is ranked at No. 70. Nakashima, the winner of the Next Generation ATP Finals in 2022, dominated Gasquet in his first serve, scoring four aces and eight other points on his first serve.

The American dominated Gasquet in their Stuttgart Open clash with heavy winners, smashing nine more points than the Frenchman managed. He also saved the one breakpoint he faced while converting one of the three breakpoints he produced.

Nakashima continued his dominance of their Stuttgart Open clash in the second set. He scored 20 points on his first serve, six of them from aces. Gasquet also struggled on the second serve, winning just seven of the 17 points he competed for. One breakpoint separated them in both sets, with Nakashima winning 6-3, 6-4.

Struff Vs Nakashima Head-2-Head

Brandon Nakashima

Before the 2024 edition of the Stuttgart Open where these players have been paired to face each other in the quarterfinals, they’ve never faced each other on the ATP tour before. Jan-Lennard Struff is ranked 35 places on the ATP rankings ahead of Brandon Nakashima.

Both players have only ever won one singles title on the ATP tour, chasing their second title each. Both players haven’t had the best of years, but Jan-Lennard Struff has had it better, winning 19 matches and losing 12 together with his Bavarian Championships final win against Taylor Fritz in 2024.
