Ian Poulter has been known to get into it with fans from time to time. Whether he is being complimented or being heckled, the English golfer loves to respond to those who interact with him. In this day and age, however, cameras are always rolling. Every interaction is now recorded and spreads on the internet like wildfire. Poulter is in some hot water after a profanity-filled interaction with a fan at a recent LIV Golf event went viral.
Ian Poulter Berates Fan At LIV Golf Event
Ian Poulter was already having a rough final round, so he was in no mood for the heckling of one fan. His final round, 79, wasn’t where he wanted to be. As he got off his golf cart, he let a fan who approached hear it.
“Why don’t you f**k off? You were f**king piping up on the 18th tee, so f**k off.”
“Shut the f**k up,” he continues. He says something else that’s barely discernible before adding: “So I suggest you shut the f**k up.”
Yikes. The LIV Golf Tour already does not have much good press and this certainly won’t help. It isn’t clear exactly what set Ian Poulter off, but reports indicate the fan had heckled the Englishman on at least two other occasions. Still, this isn’t a great look for any professional golfer.
Not A Great Look
This isn’t a great look all around. Fans are already clowning the LIV Golf Tour and Ian Poulter for this incident. On the LIV side of things, these golfers are being made ludicrous amounts of money and yet they resort to childish behavior on the course. For Poulter, it is an embarrassing look for a professional athlete. Part of the job of an athlete is to tune out the noise. He could have chosen to ignore the fan but instead decided to engage.
I will say the fan is also at fault here. It isn’t cool to heckle athletes. Let them do their job. Sit back and enjoy the entertainment. While we can say Ian Poulter and LIV Golf should do more to protect the athletes, fans can also resist the urge to be mean. It’s an all-around bad look. The sport of golf is trying to attract fans. That is why LIV Golf was created. Moments like this simply drive people away and tarnish the image of the sport.
