Bronny James will advance to the NBA draft happening on June 26th and 27th in Brooklyn, New York. Also, the Lakers have two picks this 2024 NBA Draft, which are the 17th and 56th from the LA Clippers.
The Los Angeles Lakers offseason has been a bit dramatic. It started with the dismissal of Darvin Ham following the hunt for a new head coach, which doesn’t seem to be going so well. Then, LeBron James’ future in the NBA is nearing an end as he will soon be 40 years old.
There have been rumors that LeBron’s 19-year-old son could join his father in the purple and gold uniform. Thus, if this is true, this could be the franchise’s outlook.
What would signing Bronny mean for the Lakers?
LeBron James Controls The Los Angeles Lakers Offseason Decisions?
During the Lakers’ 2024 offseason, LeBron James’ comments or appearances in the media have given the notion the franchise could be making decisions based on the NBA Champ movement. Also, the franchise isn’t willing to lose their champ to rival teams.
It started with his appearance at the Cleveland Cavalier postseason games, his up-and-coming relationship with JJ Redick, and his comment on a social media post of Dan Hurley’s interview with JJ Redick.
Finally, we have his comments on his retirement plans as Bronny plans to go pro in the NBA League. According to ESPN, LeBron made this statement in January:
I need to be on the floor with my boy. I got to be on the floor with Bronny. Either in the same uniform or a matchup against him. But I would love to do the whole Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. thing. That would be ideal, for sure. He says he wants to play in the NBA so, if he wants to do it, he’s got to put in the work. I’m here already, so I’m just waiting on him.
If the Lakers decide to take Bronny with the 17th draft pick, it would be a shred of concrete evidence to this point. The Lakers could be looking for ways to retain LeBron; thus, signing the USC Trojans guard could fulfill this offseason goal.
The Pressure on Bronny James At The Lakers
Bronny has made it clear that he wants to make a name for himself in the NBA. However, the Lakers won’t be the ideal franchise for the Trojans guard to be himself.
Let’s start with the coaching staff. Since Phil Jackson’s tenure as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the franchise hasn’t maintained a long-term contract with other coaches that followed him. This is because working and playing at the Lakers comes with a great responsibility which demands high-quality performance.
Bronny is fresh in his basketball career. Therefore, he doesn’t have a huge basketball IQ to meet the Lakers’ standards. To improve the pressure on the young lad, his father LeBron is the NBA’s all-time scorer, thus if Bronny underperforms at the Lakers, there will be pressure from the media and club. Also, this could hinder the 19-year-old’s dream and a potential loss for the Lakers.
An Awkward History Made
No one has ever played alongside his father in the NBA. Therefore, the James duo would be a sight of attraction. This is where the awkwardness comes in.
It would sound adorable when Bronny’s potential performance at the Lakers with his father syncs effortlessly. However, what happens if the 6’ 2 USC guard doesn’t perform well and he could be viewed as a problem for the team? This would be a loss for the Lakers who should be rebuilding a new young core.
Also, it could look like the franchise used LeBron’s son to lure the four-time NBA champ into extending with the franchise which could give them a bad outlook.
NBA Mock Draft 2024 Bronny James
Bronny’s performance at the 2024 NBA Combine was average. This performance could be due to the 6’ 2 guard trying to get used to the NBA playing style. However, there’s room for improvement.
Due to heart problems, the USC Trojans guard couldn’t unleash his basketball skills to help his team as he averaged 4.8 points, 2.1 assists, and 2.8 rebounds; shooting 36.6% from the floor within 19.4 mins. However, the up-and-coming superstar cleared his medicals during the combine. His future in the NBA could be promising
It would be better if Bronny plays on another good team in the NBA and builds up to top-tier teams as his balling IQ elevates. Also, he could fulfill his goal of making a name for himself and handle the pressure that comes with playing at a higher level with his father guiding him through his career from a distance.
