MLS Matchday 19: Only Four Worthy Games in Reduced Schedule

MLS Matchday 19, Nico Estevez

Major League Soccer returned to the pitch in four cities in a fit schedule for MLS Matchday 19. Over 100 MLS players were recalled by their countries that are aligned with international competition with major stakes on the line. In North America, the Copa America Cup will be contested in the USA, while the 2024 Euros will commence in Europe over the next few weeks.

However, the athletes who have not received the honor of representing the countries, still have work to do in Major League Soccer. That brings us back to the four matches for MLS Matchday 19.

The New England Revolution hosted the New York Red Bulls in the lone fight in the Eastern Conference during MLS Matchday 19. A late goal by 69th-minute substitution Emmanuel Boateng in the 81st-minute avoided additional time and secured a 1-0 shutout for the Revs. New England controlled most of the play in the game with a 58-42 possession advantage. While there was not much scoring, there were 22 combined fouls in the tightly contested match.

Sporting Kansas City claimed their 3 standings points with a 2-1 home victory against Seattle. Just like out in New England, a late home goal from a second-half substitution sent the crowd home delighted with a win as Alenis Vargas scored an 85th-minute marker for Sporting KC.

St. Louis City SC and the Portland Timbers battled in a 0-0 draw near the history St. Louis Archway. The scoreboard was fitting as neither team gave much ground to the other team in the 53-48% possession battle in favor of the home squad.

Minnesota United continued their quest to remain at the top of the Western Conference table with a 1-1 tie against FC Dallas. Both goals were scored in the first 15 minutes of the game. While Minny held the shooting advantage in the game, Dallas controlled most of the play with 63% of the possession time in the road contest. The result prompted changes to the coaching situation for FC Dallas FC following MLS Matchday 19.

FC Dallas Relieves Head Coach Nico Estevez of Position

On Sunday afternoon, MLS released news that FC Dallas has “parted ways” with Nico Estevez following the club’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota.  Dallas sits near the basement of the Western Conference with a 3-5-8 record placing them 13th out of 14 clubs. The club president Dan Hunt stated it was a “difficult decision” for the team. “A great deal of thought and deliberation went into this move as it is still early in the season. We believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club.”

Estevez sported a winning record by percentage at 28-27-28 during his time in Texas. That middling record was not enough for him to retain his position with FC Dallas after only 3 wins in 2024. Assistant coach Peter Luccin will take over the bench on an interim basis. His first game will be this upcoming weekend against St. Louis City SC.
