Babar Azam got a sense of ownership of the team’s weaknesses after the team lost by six runs in Sunday’s T20 World Cup 2024 Qualifier match against India in New York. He said that the crew had committed 59 spot balls all through the pursuit stage.
In the post-match interview after the series, Babar Azam reflected on the weaknesses of his team, especially in the number of dot balls. However, a new reconstruction of the match shows that Babar was not entirely correct in his analysis: ‘We bowled well, especially Porges, but in batting, we collapsed, losing back-to-back wickets and consuming too many dot balls. On batting, Babar Azam said, ‘We were not good in the first six overs’.

Asked about their approach to chasing Pakistan, Babar Azam insisted that there was no complex plan on how to achieve this. “Tactics were simple: it’s the path of normal play, and you just change the striker and look for the occasional boundary. But in that period, we had far too many dot balls. This is not something I can do from the tail end.

Some people opined that the ball wasn’t coming onto the bat nicely, but Babar Azam had a different perspective regarding the pitch. “The pitch looked decent. If I may say so, the balls were coming on nicely. The pace I expected was perhaps a shade or two slower. Some balls bounced a little more. ’

Going through Super 8 ordinariness
The situation as far as Pakistan was concerned had become quite delicate in the tournament, and, thereby, Babar Azam laid out his approach.
