Sean O’Malley Addresses Tension with Conor McGregor After Social Media Rant

Sean O’Malley wasn’t trying to start a feud with Conor McGregor, but as the saying goes, work until your idols become your rivals. In May, McGregor went on a social media rant blasting boxer Ryan Garcia for testing positive for the banned substance after a win over Devin Haney. Conor McGregor also took a shot at O’Malley, who tested positive for the same substance in 2019, lumping him in with Garcia.

A few weeks later, Conor McGregor softened his stance during a live stream, saying he likes O’Malley and that he “kind of got caught in the crosshairs” during his tirade about Garcia. Although O’Malley claims they patched things up privately, he hasn’t spoken to McGregor but remains a fan despite their current tension.

“I jokingly on my podcast said we talked, we’re good,” O’Malley told MMA Fighting. “I haven’t talked to him since.

“I’ll forever be a massive Conor fan. The biggest fan, watched his career play out and watched every single interview possible. I learned a ton from him. He’s a legend. That’s it. It is what it is.”

Sean O’Malley believes McGregor regretted his unprovoked attack, which is why the tweet was eventually deleted. McGregor’s comments were unjustified, given O’Malley’s positive test that was years ago and unrelated to Garcia’s situation.

O’Malley isn’t dwelling on McGregor’s remarks and isn’t holding a grudge. “I tried [to hate him]. I was like f*ck Conor, but it is what it is,” O’Malley said. “I think he realized what he said was stupid. Initially, O’Malley reacted to McGregor’s insults by supporting Michael Chandler to “absolutely sleep”.

McGregor in their upcoming fight at UFC 303. Despite this, O’Malley admits it would be hard not to back McGregor when he returns to action after three years. “We’ll see [who wins],” O’Malley said. “It’s hard for me not to [root for him], if Conor goes out there and knocks him out, it would be wild. It would just build another big Conor fight and the more Conor fights, the better.”

A potential fight between them, Conor McGregor dismissed O’Malley’s chances, saying it wouldn’t happen “in his wildest dreams.” O’Malley, however, isn’t backing down and would welcome a showdown with McGregor in the UFC.

“I wouldn’t turn down a Conor fight,” O’Malley said.
