Veteran Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu shared his insights on the upcoming India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match, expressing his views on team
Sidhu mentioned that, ideally, he would have a choice of key players. Sidhu commented on the opening combination, the impact of pitch conditions, and the importance of strike rates in the shortest format of the game.
Preferred Opening Pair

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal open the innings for India. However, he understands the rationale behind pairing Virat Kohli with the captain, Rohit Sharma.
“…They have changed the combination because then Dube and Axar wouldn’t have got the opportunity to play, so they have made this combination for a correct composition where Axar is batting at No. 8, especially on this pitch where bowlers have an advantage,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said.
Navjot Singh Sidhu elaborated on how pitch conditions influence team composition and strategy. He noted that if the tournament were held in the West Indies, where pitches are more batting-friendly, Rohit and Yashasvi would have been the preferred openers.
“If the tournament had opened in the West Indies, then we would have seen Rohit and Yashasvi opening the match. There, you wouldn’t have needed the sixth or seventh bowler. You can’t expect 200 runs on this pitch; 130 or 140 runs would be good, and this combination will work.”

In T20 cricket, Navjot Singh Sidhu emphasized the importance of being judicious with the term “game-changer,” reserving it for players who can consistently score at a rate of at least two runs per ball.
“Game changers are those who will score 2 runs per ball,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said on ‘Star Sports Press Room.’ “You are talking about strike rates of 1.5 or 1.7, but there are some players who score 2.5 to 3 runs per ball. Those who can come in and score 35 runs off 10 balls are the real game changers.”
Navjot Singh Sidhu highlighted the critical role of strike rates in T20 cricket, referencing recent discussions from the Indian Premier League. He believes that players who can maintain a high strike rate are invaluable in the shorter format.
“That’s 35 in ten balls; if two players can support someone like Virat Kohli in such a manner, they are game changers. Make no mistake about it,” he added.

Potential Game-Changers for India
Navjot Singh Sidhu identified Shivam Dube and Axar Patel as current Indian players with the potential to be game-changers. He also praised Ravindra Jadeja for his ability to score quickly.
“You look at the IPL and the T20 format, those who can actually score at 2.5 runs per ball or above are the real game changers. There is Ravindra Jadeja, there is Dube, and even Axar also scores runs at the same pace. Why is MS Dhoni such a great finisher? Because his strike rate is 2.5, sometimes even 4 runs per ball.”
