Coming on the back of a great victory over 2009 World T20 champions Pakistan, one that was preceded by a victory over Canada in the first game of the tournament, things are looking rather pretty for the co-hosts USA.
Officially a minnow of the tournament, a team that is meant to be cannon fodder for the big teams to roll over has made more than an impact in the tournament. Group A, is arguably the hottest of the tournament with India and Pakistan in it. The eyes of fans and critics are firmly on the game between these two Asian giants. However, the American team has thrown a spanner in the works, and now the question is what does the USA have in store for us next.
USA – A Great Win that Sets up Group A
As the cricketing world is processing the magnificent result where a new team that is relatively fresh on the international scene beats one of the giants of the game. Much has been said already about the thrilling super-over win the USA managed over Pakistan. The question now is, what happens to Group A which features Ireland, who have lost both their games and tournament favorites: India.
When the teams and the respective groups were announced virtually every betting man would have put India and Pakistan as hot favorites to qualify from Group A. Ireland, Canada whilst having some international experience was no real threat to the big two teams. Then there are the co-hosts. A real newcomer that has built its current in over the past number of years. And no one expected this team to do what it has already managed.
USA’s win over Pakistan opens up Group A nicely. If the Americans can avoid a defeat to Ireland, they can afford to lose to India and have a good chance of making it into the Super 8. Time will tell.
Can the USA Take on India
Whilst we still coming to terms with the shock result, the focus now shifts to the forthcoming game in Group A. No, it is not India vs Pakistan. It is you guessed it: USA vs India. Since the Americans have now defeated India’s arch-rivals, the question is how well will they fare against admittedly stronger opposition.
Worse for Pakistan, the forthcoming clash with India, now seems to have lost a bit of that edge. As a defeated team, and with a terrible record against India in ICC tournaments the expectation factor has diminished. Other than that, questions now emerge on qualification prospects. Pakistan has a reputation of losing to weaker teams in big tournaments and with one terrible defeat under their belt, the question is will they slip up again?
For the co-hosts, it is now all about remaining focused on the next game, which is against India. Once again no one expects the USA to overwhelm the Indians, the question is can they put up a challenge? They have proved it against Pakistan, can they do it again and make it to the Super 8?
