Toronto Blue Jays Finding Form During Critical 2024 Season

Toronto Blue Jays Third Baseman Ernie Clement was great on Thursday.

The Toronto Blue Jays hung on for a 6-5 victory this afternoon at home against the Baltimore Orioles. Toronto led 6-1 after six innings but a late-game surge by the Orioles offense turned this divisional game into a one-run final. A two-run homer by pinch hitter Ryan O’Hearn cut the Toronto lead to one, but Yimi Garcia was able to secure the save and secure the series split.

The Toronto Blue Jays have won seven of their last 10 games which was preceded by the Jays dropping seven of 11 games. This improved play began with Toronto sweeping the Chicago White Sox, taking two of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and splitting a four-game set with the Orioles.

It has been an inconsistent 2024 season for the Toronto Blue Jays. The team has been unable to put together a consistent stretch of solid baseball. These 10 games may provide a turning point for the ballclub. Only time will tell if that will end up being the case.

First Baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a standout game on Thursday afternoon as he propelled his team to victory. He went 2-of-3 with three RBI including a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Starting Pitcher Yusei Kikuchi nearly had a great outing wasted by a shaky Jays bullpen. Kikuchi tossed six innings and surrendered one earned run while punching out six.

How long will the Blue Jays be able to continue their winning ways?

Toronto Blue Jays Season Summary

Toronto(30-32) is fifth in the American League East and 3.5 games back of the third and final American League Wild Card spot. The Blue Jays offense has been awful this season. They are 24th in runs scored, 25th in home runs, and 20th in batting average. Their offense is led by Guerrero Jr. and Left Fielder Daulton Varsho. Guerrero Jr. is 16th in the league in batting average and Varsho leads the Toronto Blue Jays in both home runs and RBI.

The Toronto pitching staff has also struggled during the 2024 season. They are 23rd in ERA, have surrendered the most home runs this year, and are 26th in strikeouts. Their pitching staff is led by Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios. Bassitt is 6-6 this season with an ERA of 4.13. Berrios is 5-4 with an ERA of 2.80. His 2.80 is 15th-best in Major League Baseball. Both the hitting and pitching of the team must play up to their potential for the team to have a successful 2024 campaign.

The Toronto Blue Jays begin a six-game road trip on Friday with a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics. They then play a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning on Monday. Toronto got off to a slow start this season but is still firmly in the American League Wild Card picture. With about 100 games left in the 2024 regular season, the Blue Jays have more than enough time to make sure this season will not be looked at as a failure.

The Toronto Blue Jays are eyeing a third consecutive trip to the MLB Playoffs. They were swept in 2022 by the Seattle Mariners and by the Minnesota Twins last season.
