Toronto Blue Jays DFA Son Of MLB Hall Of Famer Craig Biggio In Shocking Move On June 7

The Toronto Blue Jays sent down Cavan Biggio on Friday.

The Toronto Blue Jays designated Second Baseman Cavan Biggio for assignment earlier today following a disappointing 2024 season. Cavan Biggio is the son of MLB Hall Of Famer Craig Biggio. The corresponding move for Biggio being sent down was the call-up of First Baseman Spencer Horwitz. Biggio was hitting .200 this season with two home runs and nine RBI.

The younger Biggio was never able to live up to the lofty expectations that went along with being the son of one of the best players in the history of Major League Baseball. He entered the league with high expectations and today’s news capped off what has been a disappointing tenure thus far in professional baseball.

When will Cavan Biggio make his return to the major leagues?

Cavan Biggio Career Summary

Biggio made his debut in 2019 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 but was never able to replicate that success. Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros won the award that season. Biggio is a utility player who has appeared at nearly every position on the diamond during his major league career. He is a career .227 hitter with 48 home runs and 176 RBI.

Blue Jays Manager John Schneider and General Manager Ross Atkins spoke to Biggio on Thursday and commented about how it was a “tough decision” and how they hope Biggio “gets a chance to land on his feet.”

Spencer Horwitz played 15 games last season and hit .256 with one home run and seven RBI with the Blue Jays. He is getting another chance with the Toronto Blue Jays following a great season thus far in AAA with the Buffalo Bisons. The Bisons are the AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is hitting .335 with four home runs and 38 RBI this year. He is 12th in all of AAA baseball with 38 RBI.

Toronto Blue Jays Season Summary

The Toronto Blue Jays(30-32) are fifth in the American League East but have been playing better as of late winning seven of their last 10 games. The Blue Jays offense has been awful this season. They are 24th in runs scored, 25th in home runs, and 20th in batting average. Their offense is led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Left Fielder Daulton Varsho. Guerrero Jr. is 17th in the league in batting average of .295 and Varsho leads the Toronto Blue Jays in both home runs and RBI.

The Toronto pitching staff has also struggled during the 2024 season. They are 23rd in ERA, have surrendered the most home runs this year, and are 26th in strikeouts. Their pitching staff is led by Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios. Bassitt is 6-6 this season with an ERA of 4.13. Berrios is 5-4 with an ERA of 2.80. His 2.80 is 15th-best in Major League Baseball.

Blue Jays Upcoming Schedule

Toronto is beginning a three-game set on the road against the Oakland Athletics this evening. They then head to Milwaukee for a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning on Monday.

Today’s news was disappointing as a once-promising player lost his way in the big leagues. Only time will tell if Biggio will be able to regain the form he exhibited during his rookie campaign.
