Wings vs. Aces – Preview
Las Vegas Aces
Let’s start with the road team first. The Las Vegas Aces have won back-to-back games on two separate occasions this season, with a loss following both of those two-game winning streaks, putting them at 4-2 on the season.
In the team’s recent outing, Las Vegas was defeated by the Atlanta Dream 78-74. The two teams combined for just 21 points in the opening quarter as the Aces led by a slim 11-10 margin. Fast forwarding to the final frame, A’ja Wilson connected on a step-back jumper to give Las Vegas a 60-56 lead at the 7:57 mark. However, the Dream responded with a 9-2 run, flipping a four-point deficit into a 65-62 lead that they would never relinquish down the stretch.
Las Vegas had three starters that scored in double figures, led by Wilson’s 28 points (12-for-27 FG), nine rebounds, and four blocked shots. Kelsey Plum added 19 points and six assists on 6-for-18 shooting from the field and just 3-for-12 from beyond the arc. Jackie Young – who contributed 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists – also struggled from the field, shooting just 4-for-15 from the floor.
As a team, the Aces were 36.2 percent from the field overall and 28.6 percent from distance.
Dallas Wings
Meanwhile, the Wings won three of their first five games but have lost each of their last two contests. This includes an 87-76 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday night. The game was tight right up until the fourth quarter, with Dallas trailing by a slim two-point margin (61-59). Unfortunately, the Lynx went on a game-changing 16-0 run over a five-minute stretch that enabled the home team to coast to a double-digit victory.
Arike Ogunbowale scored a team-high 21 points, but she was 6-for-17 from the field and committed a whopping 10 turnovers. Monique Billings posted her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Dallas was without Satou Sabally, who has been on the shelf with an injury since February. Additionally, Natasha Howard has been out of the team’s rotation since injuring her foot against the Chicago Sky on May 15. She expected to miss up to six weeks.
Will the Aces get back into the win column, or will the Wings hand the defending champions their second straight loss?
