Sun vs. Mystics – Preview
Washington Mystics
Starting with the road team first, the Washington Mystics have had a difficult season thus far, and that is putting it nicely. For example, they are ranked dead last in both scoring and offensive efficiency. Additionally, they have the third-worst scoring defense and defensive rating in the association.
If that is not bad enough, the Mystics enter this matchup against the best team in the league, having dropped each of their first eight contests. As I said, they have had a difficult season up to this point.
In the Mystics’ recent outing, a 90-79 loss to the New York Liberty, they overcame an early 15-point deficit before rallying to take a 75-74 lead in the final frame. Unfortunately, New York closed the game on a 16-4 run, handing Washington its eighth straight loss.
Ariel Atkins paced the team’s offense with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. She shot 5-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Shakira Austin added 12 points and six rebounds for a Connecticut squad that can’t seem to break into the win column.
Connecticut Sun
Meanwhile, the narrative is much different for the Connecticut Sun. They come into this contest ranked sixth and third, respectively, in scoring and offensive efficiency. Not only that, but they also boast the WNBA’s top defense as well. Furthermore, the Suns’ enter this matchup riding the wave of an eight-game winning streak.
In their recent outing, they defeated the Atlanta Dream by a 69-50 margin. The game was tight early on, with the two teams battling to a 17-17 stalemate after the first quarter. However, Connecticut outscored Atlanta 22-10 in the second quarter and led by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter. In the game’s final 10 minutes, the Sun held the Dream to just seven points on 3-for-16 shooting from the field.
DeWanna Bronner led the Sun’s scoring attack with 18 points and 10 boards on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor. Dijonai Carrington added 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Alyssa Thomas – who can put up a triple-double on any given night — contributed eight points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.
The 53 points represented the lowest point total of the season for the Dream and was the second-fewest points allowed by the Sun. Connecticut’s defense also held Atlanta to 28.4 percent shooting overall and a woeful 18.8 percent from 3-point range.
Will the Mystics pull off a miraculous upset, or will the Sun extend their winning streak to nine games?
