Dortmund Legend Could Move To MLS After Leaving The Club Following Champions League Final Defeat

MLS Marco Reus

Last month, Reus announced his departure from Borussia Dortmund, sparking widespread speculation that the 35-year-old forward might be heading to the United States. Reports from multiple journalists suggest that Reus will be deciding his future shortly, and it appears that MLS is a potential destination. According to St. Louis and former Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki, it seems that Reus is keen on making a move to Major League Soccer this summer.

Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reports that he has been linked to MLS teams Charlotte, St. Louis CITY, and now LA Galaxy, who are seen as the favorites.

Reus, who has received multiple offers, is rumored to be linked to MLS teams such as Charlotte FC, St. Louis CITY SC, and LA Galaxy. Reports say that LA Galaxy is the current front-runner. The player’s agents had a meeting with representatives of LA Galaxy at Wembley Stadium after Dortmund’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. LA Galaxy is set to step up their pursuit of the 35-year-old player. However, they will have to make amends with Charlotte by MLS’s player discovery rules.

After spending an impressive 12 years with Dortmund, Reus will be bidding farewell to his beloved hometown club this summer. The club and the player have mutually agreed not to renew his contract, which is set to expire in June. During his time, Reus participated in a total of 429 matches, finding the back of the net 170 times and contributing 131 assists. Despite clinching the German Cup on two occasions, he was unable to secure the desired Bundesliga title.

Roman Bürki Hopeful MLS Has A Good Chance of Getting Reus

Roman Bürki, goalkeeper for St. Louis CITY SC, expressed his desire to see Reus in the MLS soon. Bürki told ESPN

“I talked to Marco Reus ahead of the Champions League game. I texted, we didn’t talk about the move then because he was obviously focused on the game, but Major League Soccer has a very good chance of seeing him next year or the summer.”

Bürki also said that he was ready to give up his captain armband for Reus’s possible move.

“I can’t tell which team, I am still trying [to convince him] but at some point it’s up to [sporting director] Lutz [Pfannenstiel] and [club owner] Carolyn [Kindle] to make a move,” he said. “I’d be willing to give up the captain’s armband if that’s the price to pay for Reus arriving at St. Louis.”

Head coach of St. Louis CITY SC Bradley Carnell called the idea of Bürki and Reus getting back together a “fairy tale.” He told ESPN:

“Every time there is a transfer window opening, whether it’s our club or not, everyone gets names thrown out at them. We’ve had plenty of names, whether it’s to join now or in six months.”

“The Marco Reus rumors are flattering, it would be something interesting for the league and our team. It’s one of Roman’s best friends, it would be a nice fairytale story. But sometimes reality is far from that. We’re working ways and figuring things out, but right now there’s nothing to be said about the Marco Reus rumor. But the window opens up pretty soon.”

St. Louis owner Carolyn Kindle confirmed the rumors, expressing the same sentiments as Carnell. He said:

“It’s absolutely amazing [being linked to Reus.] In full disclosure, it’s difficult to separate fact from fiction.”

“Sometimes I call and ask about the rumors. But I thought it would take us three to five years to get to this point of being linked to these figures and we’re on year two and these rumors are amazing. The people of St. Louis are excited.”

With Reus bidding farewell to Borussia Dortmund, the football world is buzzing with speculation about his next move. Should he decide to join MLS, it would signify the beginning of a fresh chapter in his remarkable career. It would be exciting to see the German bring his immense talent and wealth of experience to the MLS.
