ICC Announces 'Highest Ever' Prize Money For T20 World Cup 2024

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 winners will receive the HIGHEST prize in the tournament’s history.

The previous edition in 2022 had a total prize pool of USD 5.6 million, with the winner England collecting USD 1.6 million. 

But this TIME!!! The International Cricket Council has set up a record-breaking USD 11.25 million prize for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Winners to get at least $2.45 million (USD) from the overall $11.25 million pot.

“The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will see the winners of the 20-team tournament earn at least $2.45 million, the greatest amount of money in the history of the tournament, along with the trophy that they will lift at Kensington Oval in Barbados on 29 June,” said the ICC in a statement.

Largest ICC T20 World Cup in History

The 55-match event will take place over 28 days at nine locations in the West Indies and the United States. This worldwide coverage makes it the largest ICC T20 World Cup in history. 

ICC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Geoff Allardice stated,

“This tournament is significant in multiple ways, thus it is fitting that the prize money for players reflects that. The players will entertain hundreds of millions of fans worldwide in what we hope will be an Out of This World event.” 

The T20 World Cup 2024 is a breakthrough tournament in cricket history, with a record 20 countries competing in four groups of five. Every team will face their group stage opponents before the two top teams from each category advance to the Super 8s, which begin on June 19.

Here are the four groups for the T20 World Cup 2024:

Group A: Ireland, Pakistan (A2), USA. India (A1), Canada, 

Group B: Australia (B2), Namibia, Oman, Scotland, England (B1)

Group C: Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, New Zealand, West Indies

Group D: Netherlands, South Africa (D1), Sri Lanka (D2), Bangladesh, Nepal

Prize Money and Significance

The four teams who fail to qualify for the Super 8s will get USD 382,500 each, while the teams that finish ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth will receive USD 247,500 each. Participants who place 13th through 20th will get $225,000 apiece.

“And each team receives an additional $31,154 for each match they win, excluding the semi-finals and final,” the sport’s governing body stated.

This ninth edition will include 20 teams playing over 28 days in nine sites around the West Indies and the United States, making it the largest tournament of its type.

“The tournament will start with 40 matches in the first round, leading to the Super 8, followed by semi-finals in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.” The final match will take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, where the 2024 men’s champions will be crowned, according to the ICC’s official media release.

England is defending and pursuing their third T20 World Cup title, having won the last edition in Australia in 2022.
