Stefano Tsitsipas has never won a Grand Slam title in his career. He’s gotten to the finals of the French Open and Australian Open once each, losing both times to Novak Djokovic.
Tsitsipas’ 2024 season began in the Australian Open where he was knocked out by Taylor Fritz in the fourth round. He then got to the semifinal of Los Cabos where he got knocked out by Casper Ruud.
His season didn’t go to plan until the Monte-Carlo Masters where he stormed his way to the final, earning a revenge win over Casper Ruud to win the title. He defeated Alexander Zverev, Karen Khachanov, and Jannik Sinner along the way.
Stefano Tsitsipas’ clay-court season has been successful, with the Greek player reaching two finals, three quarter-finals, and going home with one trophy. Ranked number nine in the world, he’d want to return to the French Open final for the first time since 2021.
Matteo Arnaldi Takes The First Set
Matteo Arnaldi has been in good form since the 2024 French Open began. Until his match with Stefano Tsitsipas, he had dropped one set, which was against Arthur Fils in his first match of the tournament, and won eight consecutive sets including his victory over Andrey Rublev.
He started against Tsitsipas the way he ended things against Rublev, with a break of the Greek’s serve and a win of the first set in just 35 minutes.
Tsitsipas Completes A Hard-Fought Comeback
Tsitsipas held on in the second set, saving set points till he finally secured a breakpoint for himself to drag the set to a tiebreak. With the tiebreak at 6-4, Tsitsipas forced Arnaldi to go long after the Greek almost scored a crosscourt forehand winner. This leveled the match at 1-1.
After gifting Matteo Arnaldi his second loss of a set since the French Open started, Tsitsipas came out more determined in the third set than earlier.
The Greek secured a double break after smashing away an overhead volley which resulted from the Italian barely blocking a backhand winner. At 5-2 and on set point, the Greek stuck to the strategy of hitting his backhand down the line till Arnaldi buckled and hit his return shot into the net.
Stefano Tsitsipas Wins To Book Revenge Match
With Arnaldi behind for the first time since the 2024 French Open began, he crumbled quickly in the fourth set. Stefano Tsitsipas secured an early break of the Italian’s serve in the first game of the set.
Stefano Tsitsipas continued his winning combination of wide serves and volleys all through the set to maintain his double break lead till he got to match point.
Throughout the match, both players had seven aces. From the second set onwards, Tsitsipas was able to churn out 21 break points, converting five of them en route to his 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 win.
This victory sets up an opportunity to face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz had knocked Tsitsipas out of the quarterfinals of the French Open last year. The Spaniard eventually got out in the semifinal by the eventual winner of the tournament, Novak Djokovic. This is Stefano Tsitsipas’ 4th appearance in a quarterfinal this clay-court season.
