Sunil Gavaskar’s Good Expectations from Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup and Beyond

Virat Kohli

Well, no one could blame this great cricketer of the past for voicing his opinion, especially if the action in question involves the criticism of the current Indian batting star, Virat Kohli. After Kohli’s poor show in the recently concluded IPL season, which saw him come in for criticism over his strike rate.

Gavaskar had not minced his words. Nevertheless, Kohli’s performance had been par excellence in the IPL, and he became the highest run-getter of this tournament.

Moving forward, Gavaskar has laid new targets for Kohli, as he is now gearing up to play for India in the next T20 World Cup. One of the dreams that Gavaskar has for Virat is to be able to reach a special number during India’s series in Australia this year.

Gavaskar urged Kohli to emulate him and two other cricketers to be the third player to register a Test ton on all the Australian surfaces. It also must be noted that Kohli has not scored a century against Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. This feat, if accomplished, will make him the third person in history to be a part of Gavaskar and Alastair Cook.

Kohli’s record in Australia

 Virat Kohli

Although Virat has had healthy averages and six Test centuries down under, he has never scored a Test century at The Gabba. His failure to score a century during India’s last triumph at the venue, during which he flew back to India for the birth of his daughter, meant this landmark also remained elusive.

Even though Virat was not available for the final Test at the Gabba, Rahane led India to script history by clinching the series. This win was another series triumph on Australian soil, the second series in a row, which demonstrated the ability and strength of the Indian cricket team.

While gearing up for the T20 World Cup and other challenges, Kohi must understand that Gavaskar’s expectations mean that one has to set new records and create a marvelous history within the Rogerian framework of the historical pleasures of cricket.

Kohli’s journey to The Gabba shows the cricket fan the hope and potential of the hero to equal the legends of the game like Gavaskar and end in style like Cook.
