St. Louis Cardinals Clawing Back From Shocking Start To 2024 Season

The St. Louis Cardinals are seemingly turning a corner this season.

The St. Louis Cardinals have finally done something they have failed to do since the middle of April. For the first time since April 16. the Cardinals are a .500 ballclub. With a 5-3 win earlier today on the road against the Cincinnati Reds, the Cardinals have a record of 27-27. The Cardinals were as many as nine games below .500 on May 11 following a seven-game losing streak.

St. Louis scored first today in Cincinnati thanks to a solo home run by Designated Hitter Matt Carpenter in the top of the third and never looked back. They trailed at no point in Wednesday’s contest.

Following a terrible stretch of games to begin the month of May, the St. Louis Cardinals are 12-3 over their last 15 games and have won seven of their last eight ballgames. How long will St. Louis be able to keep up their improved level of play?

St. Louis Cardinals Offense Leaves Room For Improvement

The St. Louis Cardinals(27-27) are third in the National League Central, only four games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the division. St. Louis is now also o.5 GB of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. The team has a poor offense as they are 19th in batting average, 28th in runs scored, and 25th in home runs. Their offense is led by Shortstop Mason Winn and Second Baseman Nolan Gorman. Wynn is 14th in the league with a batting average of .308 while Gorman leads the St. Louis Cardinals with 10 home runs.

The offense has been playing better as of late, but their statistics are skewed due to a miserable start to the season at the plate. The two marquee players on the St. Louis offense are having extremely slow starts to the 2024 season. Third Baseman Nolan Arenado is hitting .257 with four home runs and 25 RBI and First Baseman Paul Goldschmidt is hitting .224 with seven home runs and 22 RBI. Both Arenado and Goldschmidt need to perform much better for the Cardinals to reach their fullest potential in 2024.

Cardinals Pitching Staff Also Provides Room For Improvement

The St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff, while better than their offense, has struggled as a unit so far this regular season. They are 20th in ERA, have surrendered the eighth-most home runs, and are 25th in opposing batting average. The pitching staff is led by Sonny Gray who is fourth in the league with seven wins.

The St. Louis  Cardinals bullpen has been the highlight of their team so far this season. Closer Ryan Helsley is tied for the league lead with 18 saves. Relief Pitchers JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge are first and third in the league respectively in terms of holds with 18 and 15.

Cardinals Upcoming Schedule

The Cardinals have an off-day on Thursday before heading to Philadelphia for a three-game with the Phillies beginning on Friday. St. Louis then heads to Houston where they face the Astros for a three-game set that gets going on Monday, June 3.

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to make the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2022, but even with playing much better as of late, they will have their work cut out for them.
