BCCI Head Coach: Shah declines rumors approaching Ex-Australian cricketers.

Currently, Rahul Dravid is serving as the BCCI Head Coach of the Senior men’s team, as a successor to Ravi Shastri. Ravi Shastri, under whom India became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia (2018-19) followed it with another series win in 2020-21. India was also the first team to win all 5 T20Is in a bilateral series when it blanked New Zealand 5-0. Under Mr Shastri and his team’s guidance, India won all their seven Test series at home.

Rahul Dravid’s stint as India’s Head Coach will end with the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in June and despite the ICC Trophy drought, it has been one of the most successful periods in recent history for Indian cricket. India has dominated bilateral limited-over assignments, both at home and away, under Dravid’s tenure, while also making it to the final of two marquee world events – the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup – both in 2023.

While Dravid has reportedly told the board that he is not interested in a third stint, former Australian players like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer have claimed that they have turned down approaches for the high-profile position of BCCI Head Coach.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah today rejected claims that the board has approached any former Australian cricketer to be the next BCCI head coach and hinted that Rahul Dravid’s successor could be an Indian by saying that he should have a “deep understanding” of the game’s structure in the country.

“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect,” Shah.

“Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks,” Shah said.

The BCCI secretary also remarked that having in-depth knowledge of Indian domestic cricket will be one of the important criteria for appointing the next BCCI Head coach. He said the understanding would be crucial to “truly elevate Team India to the next level.”

Gautam Gambhir among the top contenders for BCCI Head Coach.

The BCCI recently approached Gautam Gambhir to become Team India’s head coach. Since the BCCI has approached him, Gambhir seems to be the frontrunner to become the BCCI head coach.

Gambhir has been associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor in the ongoing IPL 2024, and under his guidance, the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise has topped the points table for the first time in IPL history. Before taking the job with KKR, with whom he also won two IPL titles as captain in 2012 and 2014, Gambhir was associated with the Lucknow Super Giants and played a big part in their back-to-back IPL playoff qualification.

Kumar Sangakkara not interested for the BCCI head coach.

T20 World Cup

Sangakkara has stated that he doesn’t have the time to commit as the Indian team coaching job is hectic, taking almost 9-10 months a year.

“I have not been approached and I don’t have time to commit full-time to an India coaching job. Happy with my stint with Royals and let’s see how it goes,” the Sri Lanka legend said.

Sangakkara has been the director of cricket operations and head coach for Rajasthan Royals in the past few seasons. Meanwhile, his team failed to win the trophy despite qualifying for the playoffs twice in the last three editions of the IPL.

The Royals started the campaign on a dominating note as they won eight out of their nine matches and were in a firm position to finish top two but the last quarter of the season didn’t go as planned for them as they finished third on the table.
