Nonetheless, currently there are many individuals vying for the position; the only recent well-known cricketer to publicly deny such interest is Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the lookout for a new head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team. With the position expected to be advertised after the T20 World Cup in June. It has only been a few days since the BCCI announced that they are inviting applications for this high-profile position.  Thus there are many big names already on the horizon.

In the same vein as cricketing legends Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricket captain, and Justin Langer, another former Australian cricket star, who also declined the possibility of succeeding Dravid. Perhaps with good reason, Kumar Sangakkara has expressed his lack of interest in the position. In an interview about his chances of succeeding the post of head coach, Kumar Sangakkara brought out his disagreement in a flash.

The Sri Lankan legend quickly dispelled the rumor that has been circulated on social media by saying that he made no application for the post and the BCCI never offered him the job. He also expressed his inability to devote sufficient time to India’s men’s cricket team coach position.

However, Kumar  Sangakkara went ahead to debunk any such intentions and instead affirmed the fact that he is still involved with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he holds the position of director of cricket for the team.

The Indian cricket team management has not shown interest, and I do not really have the time to devote myself to a full-time coaching role for the Indian cricket team.

‘It has been great playing for the Royals, and let me see how it goes now,’  Kumar Sangakkara said after RR blew a golden chance to qualify for the final after losing the Qualifier 2 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Apart from being associated with the Royals, he has also served as the president of Marylebone Cricket Club and is currently the chairman of the MCC world cricket committee. In the season of IPL 2024, the Rajasthan Royals qualified themselves for the playoffs under his leadership, but the Rajasthan Royals were defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator round of the playoffs.

That said, Kumar Sangakkara has made it crystal clear that Indian won’t have his 236-Test experience, so the BCCI will have to look for Dravid’s replacement somewhere else. Thus, it stays so far, when the search is ongoing, it remain to be seen who will take on the responsibility of coaching the Indian men’s cricket team post-T20 World Cup.
