Mystik Dan has been denied possession of the coveted Triple Crown. Seize the Grey has edged out this year’s Kentucky Derby winner for the garland of Black Eyed Susan’s. We will have to wait until next spring to see who will be the horse to make yet another attempt to win the coveted Triple Crown trophy. The victory for Seize the Grey, a horse that had just enough points after the Jeff Ruby Steaks race at Turfway Park to enter the Derby, was a wire-to-wire win. Before the race, this horse was deemed to be a long shot to win the Preakness Stakes.

Mystik Dan Finishes Second

Mystik Dan had recently become the favorite to win the Preakness after Muth, a Bob Baffert horse, was scratched early in the week due to spiking fevers. Nothing this year’s Derby winner did was enough to pull out the win needed for the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Seize the Grey led for a significant amount of the race.  Mystic Dan and Imagination tried to take over from Seize the Grey, but all efforts were not. This year’s Derby winner had to settle for a second-place finish on this day.

Lukas Wins Another Preakness

Seize the Grey’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, came within one win of tying Bob Baffert for wins at Pimlico with seven Preakness victories and became the oldest horse trainer to win at the Preakness.

While we won’t see a Triple Crown victory this year, we can appreciate the efforts made and put forth by Mystik Dan and his entire team of trainers, jockeys, and owners to see him all the way to victory. Many look forward to what both the first and second-place finishers will do next. Will one or both of them run in the Belmont Stakes, which will be raced at Saratoga, in three weeks? Will neither of them run in the final race of the Triple Crown? All that and more awaits at Belmont on June 8, 2024.
