Tottenham, a Real Problem for Guardiola’s Manchester City

Tottenham vs Man City

The Cityzens need to win three points against Tottenham to take a step closer to lifting the Premier League title, but… it’s going to take a lot of work.

The Premier League is ending, and there is still no champion. With only one matchday left (plus some postponed games), Arsenal and Manchester City are dueling for the title

This Tuesday, Pep Guardiola’s team has a crucial match in which they need to win three points: they visit Tottenham for the penultimate matchday. However, it’s not going to be easy for the Cityzens, and both the record and the statistics prove it. Just ask Pep Guardiola himself.

City’s history against Tottenham under Guardiola

It turns out that during his time managing City, Tottenham was the team against which the Catalan lost the most in the Premier League (6). Not only that, but it’s also the second club against which he’s registered the most losses in his career (7). There’s no doubt that the team managed by Ange Postecoglou is a tough opponent because of their aggressive style of play and their great defenders, but the numbers are also against City this time.

In addition, the last four times Guardiola visited Tottenham, all at their new stadium, he lost all four times and didn’t score a single goal, something very unusual for his team

On February 1, 2020, they lost 2-0 with goals from Heung-min Son and Steven Bergwijn. Then, on November 21 of that year, with goals from Giovanni Lo Celso and Son, they lost again by the same score. In August 2021, it was 0-1 with a goal from Son, and the last time they traveled to London to face them was in February 2023, in another minimal defeat with a goal from Harry Kane.

Since the creation of the Premier League, they have played 53 matches, of which 28 were won by Tottenham and 17 by City. The remaining eight ended in a draw.

Tottenham’s Performance Could Define Everything

This upcoming match carries more than just a special significance: a win for Tottenham would not only boost their standing but also hand a significant advantage to their arch-rivals, who are hot on City’s heels in the title race.

Currently, the Gunners have 86 points in 37 matches, while Pep’s men have 85 but with one more match in hand. It’s a nail-biting finale that could be decided by goal difference in case of a tie.

“If we don’t beat Tottenham, we won’t be champions,” were the Spaniard’s words. “We’ve played against them twice this season. We won’t win the Premier League if we don’t beat them. We have to do it. Playing at Tottenham’s home is always very demanding, especially this season. There are difficulties, but we know what’s at stake,” Pep added at a press conference yesterday.

“We’re trying to do something special, so we have to win this time, or Arsenal will be the champion. We only think about having to win this game, you can’t take into account other situations, everyone knows what’s at stake,” he assured.

Manchester City is going for a record that no other English team has been able to achieve since the top English category is known as the Premier League: winning the title four times in a row.

Guardiola knows: “We must read and interpret the game as best as possible. Have the right tension and be focused. If you go into these games too relaxed, you’ll have problems. Tottenham is fighting for a Champions League spot, so they have a big goal, but so do we”.
