Man United have now conceded more goals this season than in their infamous 1970-71 campaign. Erik ten Hag and his players tasted defeat for the 14th time this Premier League season on Sunday, as they were beaten 1-0 by title-chasing Arsenal at Old Trafford. An early goal from Leandro Trossard made the difference, the 82nd strike which United have conceded in their 49 games across all competitions this term.
The Red Devils last conceded more times than that 53 years ago when they were initially managed by Wilf McGuiness before Sir Matt Busby returned the dugout midway through the campaign, but could only guide them to eighth in the old First Division.

Although losing to Arsenal made it just one point collected from a possible nine in recent games, Ten Hag was taking the positives from ‘being competitive’ against the new frontrunners. That said, Man United now concludes the season with matches against Newcastle United and Brighton potentially requiring victories in each to have a realistic chance of ending the season in seventh. Should United defeat sixth-placed Newcastle on Wednesday, they would sit level on points with the Magpies with one fixture remaining, with Newcastle going to Brentford on the final day.

With a new structure expected to take place above manager Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils are set for significant change this summer – potentially including the Dutchman. Ten Hag remains under pressure at Old Trafford, with Man United looking at several different replacement options, including Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi, and Gareth Southgate. Off the pitch, though, there is now great hope with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS looking to oversee drastic improvement on the pitch following their arrival earlier this year.
