England Players’ Poor And Premature IPL Exit Ahead of Pakistan Series: Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes

IPL

Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his displeasure over the decision of some of the England players to leave the ongoing IPL before the Pakistan series, which is a preparation for the T20 World Cup. In his piece for Mid Day, Gavaskar stressed the significance of keeping the promises to the IPL franchises. He proposed that the players who decide to withdraw should have their salaries cut as a result of their actions.

The former player of the Indian team shows discomfort with the players leaving one of the world’s top domestic leagues in cricket. It is because they are preparing their team for the T20 World Cup.

Gavaskar was also in favor of the punishment for the cricket boards, so he demanded the penalties for breaking the contracts. He said that it was wrong for the boards to get a commission from the IPL fees when such a system is only in the IPL and not in other T20 leagues around the world.

The people affected by this controversy are Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone who represent Punjab Kings; Will Jacks and Reece Topley of Royal Challengers Bengaluru; Jos Buttler from the Rajasthan Royals; Phil Salt of Kolkata Knight Riders; and Moeen Ali of Chennai Super Kings.

Gavaskar insisted that players who assured the franchises of their willingness to participate in the IPL and then pulled out should be punished financially. He emphasized that franchises spend a lot of money on players, and as a result, team dynamics and planning are disrupted when players are withdrawn suddenly.

This act done by the English players is very ungrateful. This has also taken down the reputation of England’s top players, as they are not fulfilling the contracts for the IPL 2024 season.

Unique Commission Structure

IPL

The IPL is unique in the sense that the boards get a commission for the IPL fees, a practice that is not followed in the other T20 leagues in the world. He doubted the justice of this scheme and highlighted the necessity of openness in financial transactions.

England is going to play a four-day international series against Pakistan, which is going to start on May 22. The players who are present at the IPL are supposed to come back in time for the series; therefore, they will be ready for the national team duties.

Gavaskar’s evaluation reveals insight into the intricacies encompassing player responsibilities, monetary plans, and board liabilities of worldwide T20 associations. As cricket develops, guaranteeing responsibility and decency in such matters becomes fundamental for the uprightness and supportability of the game.
