Ange Postecoglou Believes ‘100% of Spurs Fans’ Wish For City Loss

Tuesday’s match between Spurs and Manchester City is set to be crucial in the title race. If Ange Postecoglou’s side manages to secure a win or draw against City, it would give north London rivals Arsenal a significant advantage in the race to finish ahead of the defending champions. The Gunners currently have a slim one-point lead at the top, although they have played one more game than City. A win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would see City reclaim the top spot, with just one game left to play.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s side still chase Aston Villa, who currently hold the fourth position with a four-point lead. The stakes are high, as a Champions League spot is up for grabs.

Postecoglou is optimistic that the majority of Tottenham fans will share his desire to defeat Manchester City, even if it means Arsenal winning the Premier League title after a two-decade drought. Ange Postecoglou expresses his bewilderment towards Tottenham fans who would support their team’s defeat solely to prevent Arsenal from winning the Premier League title.

He anticipated that the Spurs fans would make their last home game of the season, against City, a passionate and good occasion. Ange Postecoglou believes Spurs fans will put the growth of their team ahead of their North London rivalry. He also says he doesn’t understand the fans who have a different point of view.

“I understand rivalry. I was part of one of the biggest ones in the world in the last couple of years with Celtic and Rangers,” Ange Postecoglou said. But I’ve never, and will never, understand if someone wants their own team to lose. That’s not what sport is about. It’s not what I love about the game.”

The 58-year-old Australian believes “100% of Spurs supporters” want his team to win versus City, but admits “people are allowed to feel the way they do”. Ange Postecoglou, on the other hand, stated that he has not “lived my life” getting “pleasure from other people’s misery”. He added:

“Real success looks like trophies. Anything else in between, bragging rights, whatever, it is absolutely meaningless to me. What do you think is going to happen? What do you think we are going to do as a team, or any team on this planet? Aren’t we going to just try to win? It’s a simple premise. How that makes people feel, I’m not really fussed and I don’t really care.”

What Guardiola Thinks Of The Match

Guardiola made it clear how crucial the result on Tuesday will be. According to him, anything other than a victory against Ange Postecoglou would mean missing out on the opportunity to secure an extraordinary fourth consecutive English top-flight title. City have emerged victorious in seven consecutive games, showcasing their dominance in the Premier League since December. Meanwhile, Spurs managed to secure a much-needed win against Burnley on Saturday, ending their five-match winless streak.

“The mindset is easy because if we don’t win, we don’t win the Premier League,” Guardiola said. “It’s obvious. We have just one option: win the game. We travel for that.”

In previous seasons, Guardiola’s team has faced similar situations. City have demonstrated their ability to stay composed and secure the title by the narrowest of margins in 2018-19 and 2021-22. Guardiola added:

“I felt from what happened in the past with the way we were playing against Liverpool I said ‘Either we win, win, win or it will be over’. I had the feeling to beat Arsenal is so difficult because they make very good things in all departments and are difficult to beat so if we have the chance for it to depend on us we have to use it.”
