Kylian Mbappé looks to finally be leaving PSG. Maybe the greatest Frenchman to ever play the game announced a video posted to his social media. Mbappé has already had a legendary career despite his age, 25 years old.
He reached the top of the mountain, one that most don’t reach when he won the World Cup at just 19 years old in 2018. At that age, Mbappé was already the best player on the French national team and he was on full display in that World Cup scoring 4 goals.
Where is Mbappé going next?
What went wrong at PSG?
It was an interesting tenure for Mbappé at PSG, to say the least. A lot of hope for the team when he was loaned from Monaco in 2017 and with a mandatory purchase option of 180 million euros. Of course, PSG paid that and signed him long-term.
Sure PSG won everything domestically in the last few years but there was hope that PSG could win a UEFA Champions League with Mbappé, a tournament the team has never won. They haven’t won an international tournament since the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001 and their only other international win was the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup in 1996. Both of these tournaments are now defunct.
The pressure that Mbappé felt during his 7 years with the team was to win a Champions and it never happened. PSG came close in 2020 going to the Final in an empty stadium due to COVID and lost to Bayern Munich 1-0. That was the closest they got. PSG later signed Lionel Messi to create a super team and it never worked for various reasons but mainly just health. The three of them couldn’t ever get a rhythm with constant injuries plaguing them.

PSG: Where is Mbappé Going Next?
There has been constant speculation for the last two years since Messi left PSG as to where Mbappé was going next. It seemed like it was certain that Mbappé was leaving after this season when his contract expired. He could have opted to extend the deal but he declined to, something he talked about in his video today.
It seems according to many sources that Mbappé is leaving PSG for one of the best clubs ever, Real Madrid. It will be a huge boost to a team that doesn’t need it. Real Madrid is playing in the UEFA Champions League Final next month against Borussia Dortmund. Now they will be getting another star to add to already a great team.
What could go wrong now? Surely Mbappé will win a UEFA Champions League now, right? That’s hard to say, signing stars doesn’t guarantee success, ask PSG.
