Famous F.C. Wrexham One Gigantic Step Away From Premier League

Wrexham, Wrexham A.F.C, League One

Do you remember the third oldest professional football club, Wrexham, that was purchased by Deadpool and “that other guy”?  You know who I am talking about…. macaroni, nope. Mcdonald’s, better…. Milk n’ Honey, is so close.  McElhenney. Ah, that’s it!  Rob McElhenney.

Yeah, Ryan Reynolds and that guy with the tough-to-type name purchased a struggling soccer club in September 2020. Through shrewd investment in operations, the Hollywood duo have turned the fortunes of the club around over the last three seasons and have filmed the process for cameras along the way.

The Emmy-winning sports documentary, Welcome To Wrexham, has received critical acclaim from the media and worldwide support from fans since its debut. The initial season of the series covered the 2021-2022 Wrexham club’s heartbreaking initial campaign. They lost in extra time of the Playoff semi-finals game to Grimsby leaving outside of the prominent football scene in the UK to end 2022.

Inspired by the success of the squad despite remaining in the National League, Reynolds and McElhenney continued to provide resources for the Welsh sporting club. A new goalie and some additional talent were added to the team as they began the quest for promotion again in 2022-23 in the second season of Welcome to Wrexham. This season would have a far more celebratory finish as 40,000 people flooded the championship parade after Wrexham finally earned promotion to League Two.

Wrexham A.F.C. returned to the Racecourse Ground located in Wales, United Kindom for their 15th consecutive season in the National League. Before Christmas Day in 2023, Wrexham lost only four times on the way to a 12-3-7 start. A tough start to the New Year saw Wrexham lose three out of five games.  before course-correcting the ship and losing only three more times the rest of the season.

Coach Parkinson would get the team fit once again around Valentine’s Day 2024. Wrexham A.F.C. lost only three more times the rest of the season. “Super” Paul Mullin led League Two in scoring with 24 goals, a number I didn’t quite realize they reached in a season of the perfect game.

Jokes aside, the 29-year-old striker put coach Phil Parkinson’s club squarely on his 5-foot-10 shoulders leading them to a 26-10-10. Wrexham earned automatic promotion to League One on April 13th following a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers. Wrexham Dreaming of Premier League Football Next Season

With the EFL season coming to a close a week ago, the story for Season 4 of the hit show will now be written in real time. Wrexham A.F.C. enters the Summer transfer window beginning in early June. The ownership group will most certainly be looking to add the talent of the squad given the promotion to the much tougher League One. If you want a deep dive into the difference, check here.

For the TL: DR version, League One is the step before reaching the pinnacle of soccer for UK football clubs, the Premier League. Up until the Premier League, clubs typically have to be financially shrewd to even survive season-to-season, let alone vie for a chance at a prestigious English football league title.

What does this mean for Wrexham?  Well, for starters, the front office has a chance to improve the squad between June and September. Then the real grind begins as this season should be a battle every step of the way against UK clubs that likely have more talent to put on the pitch. IF, and that is a big if, Wrexham A.F.C. wins enough games they will gain entry into arguably the best F.C.  league in the world.
