Wrexham: 5 Thrilling Matches That Earned Them an EFL League One Promotion

Wrexham v Forest Green Rovers - Sky Bet League Two wrexham afc league one

Wrexham captured the hearts and minds of viewers once the Netflix series Welcome to Wrexham came out. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny took over the small Welsh team and then brought them to the best finish they have had in years. It goes to show what some time, effort, and belief can have in a struggling football side.

Now, the Welsh side has been through a tough and intense season that see them right on the brink of a League One promotion. Who knows, in just a few years they could make their way up to the Championship and Premier League.

Game vs. Swindon Town

One of the biggest games of the season was back in August 2023. The Red Dragons and Swindon Town had a thrilling and enthralling high-scoring game that is one of the most exciting matches to ever grace Welsh football.

The Town lost to MK Dons and started the season with just a few points, giving fans a cause for concern. But they came back with a vengeance when they played Swindon Town on August 19, 2023.

The Robins came from a huge 4-1 deficit to draw the game 5-5. The fact the team came back from 4-1, and then went on to score four more goals, is a huge testament to their character and coaching staff.

Another reason this was one of the big games of the season was because Ben Foster, the English stalwart goalkeeper, announced his retirement just a few days later.

Game vs. Salford City

The matchday squad faced off against the ever-tough Salford City on October 14, 2023, and claimed a narrow victory. Late goals from Davies and Fletcher saw The Red Dragons win the game with just one minute left on the clock.

Game vs. Newport County

Right before the Christmas holiday, the squad faced off against Newport County at home. Playing in front of some of the biggest crowd to ever come to the Racecourse, the home team was able to beat Newport 2-0, a welcome payback from their last loss in the play-off final in 2013.

Game vs. Grimsby Town

A few weeks ago, The Robins faced off against the challenging Grimsby Town side on March 23, 2024. But the tough opponent and physical challenges didn’t dissuade the tough players from scoring three goals in the first half. Mullin’s volley, which was sweetly struck, and two goals from Andy Cannon saw the home side take charge of this intense game in the first 45 minutes.

The final game that really put a huge nail in the coffin of promotion was the squad beating Crawley Town 4-1 on April 9th, 2024. This game happened just last week and saw lots of conviction, drive, and determination from the Welsh side.

A comfortable victory for The Red Dragons shows their dominance in the league – and how League One is soon on the horizon.

Hopefully by the time The Town makes it back to League One, Premier League and EPL funding has made necessary strides.
