Dortmund mounted a late comeback to overturn Frankfurt’s dreams of winning at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. Mario Gotze, a former Dortmund player, scored his third goal against Dortmund, giving the visitors a lead in the 13th minute. However, in the last 10 minutes before the final whistle, goals from Hummels and Emre Can sealed a 3-1 win for Dortmund over Frankfurt.
Dortmund Win Despite Gotze Leading Goal
Dortmund emerged victorious despite Mario Gotze scoring the opening goal for Frankfurt. The match took place at Signal Iduna Park, and Dortmund made a remarkable comeback after a slow first half. Gotze, a former Borussia player, scored the first goal against his old team. There was a subdued celebration afterward. Alexander Mayer saved Omar Marmoush’s one-on-one opportunity to score with his shot. However, Gotze capitalized on the rebound and found the net from the farthest corner. Dortmund equalized when Adeyemi scored in the 33rd minute, resulting in a 1-1 draw at halftime. Marmoush attempted to give Frankfurt the lead, but the referee disallowed the goal due to offside.
The second half started quietly and remained goalless for the first thirty minutes. However, there were several blocked shots and crucial saves made by Alexander Meyer. Later on, Mayer saved Marmoush’s powerful volley in his attempt to give Frankfurt the lead after blocking Ebimbe’s long-range shot. Although Dortmund had not had a single shot on target in the Frankfurt goal area, they managed to find the net in the 81st minute of the second half.
Borussia earned a free kick, and Julian Brandt delivered it to Hummels, who headed the ball past Frankfurt’s goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp, for a goal. There was a dramatic moment when VAR closely reviewed Emre Can’s red card, but it was later overturned. Emre Can sealed the late victory with a penalty kick. Dortmund earned the penalty after Robin Koch fouled Byonoe-Gitten in the penalty area. Emre Can successfully converted the penalty, securing a late win for the Yellow Blacks and solidifying their fourth-place position in the Bundesliga table and their qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
