Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been having an incredible 2023-24 season. The 25-year-old earned his 2nd All-Star appearance and is in the conversation to win MVP. His remarkable play has exceeded expectations as he’s leading the OKC Thunder to the top seed in the Western Conference.
Growth of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder viewed SGA as a franchise player and acquired him in the Paul George trade back in 2019. OKC decided to rebuild after a disappointing Round 1 exit to the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2019 playoffs. Shai was the building block alongside numerous first-round picks, and Sam Presti is seeing his plans come to fruition. SGA has blossomed into a superstar and grew into a terrific leader for one of the youngest teams today.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Amazing 2023-24 Season
SGA is averaging 31.1 points (2nd in the NBA), 5.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 2.1 steals (leads the NBA), and 1.0 blocks. He has also been accomplishing these stats very efficiently, as his shooting splits are 54.6/38.5/88.2. Shai has scored 30 or more points in 47 (out of 63) games this season, which is first among all players in the NBA.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Attempt At History
With SGA’s dominant 30+ point scoring run, he is on his way to making history. He has the chance to join James Harden as the only player to score 30 points against every NBA team in the regular season.
The 25-year-old only needs to score 30 points against the Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors to accomplish this feat. Luckily for the 2-time All-Star, he will get two chances to top 30 points against the Mavs (March 14 in OKC, April 14 in OKC), Pacers (March 12 in OKC, April 5 in Indiana), and Bucks (March 24 in Milwaukee, April 12 in OKC). Shai will only get one more shot against the Raptors, but the game will be played back in his hometown of Canada (March 22) where he will most likely want to put on a show in front of his friends and family.
Whether SGA accomplishes this rare stat or not remains to be seen. Regardless of what happens, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is having an outstanding season. He is proving himself to be one of the best players in the league. The MVP candidate has made OKC relevant again and will try to do something that nobody in a Thunder uniform has done before, and that’s winning a championship for this organization.
