In a thrilling Tuesday night matchup, the Vancouver Canucks emerged victorious against the Los Angeles Kings with a 2-1 win, courtesy of J.T. Miller’s power-play goal just 1:36 into overtime. But Miller’s clutch slap shot from the right side of the faceoff circle was his 31st of the season.
He was the difference-maker once again as the Canucks secured their second consecutive victory and became the third team this season to reach the 40-win mark. The Florida Panthers (43) and New York Rangers (40) are the most recent two teams to do so.
Pettersson’s Prowess: Vancouver Canucks Triumph Over Kings Marks Resilience and Milestones
The Vancouver Canucks, with a 40-17-7 total, are at the head of the Western Conference. And they are now two points above Dallas. That victory was even more significant for Vancouver, as it was considered a morale booster after their 5-1 loss to the Kings only a few days ago.
Miller reflected on the win to emphasize the team’s resilience against the Kings, a huge team that was well-known for making their opponents make mistakes. Miller provided us with the “well, we didn’t crack at all” comment. For instance, once that team gets you to do something specifically to get them their opportunities, they look to take advantage of them.
One of the key players who recently inked an eight-year contract with the Canucks and was instrumental in winning was Elias Petersson, who found the net in the middle of the second period of the game. The 25-year-old Sweden got the magical record of 30 goals consecutively for three seasons and became the 7th player to have the record repeated in franchise history. Moreover, Pettersson is at the threshold of reaching 400 career points. With 165 goals and 399 points in 389 games—a trend that could result in him becoming the second-fastest Canucks player in terms of reaching this milestone after Pavel Bure who did it in just 360 games.
Pettersson, however, not being affected by the upcoming 300-point mark, said, “I didn’t notice that. But that’s great anyway.” Feeling content, he said that it was “nice to get my name on the score sheet again.”
Dazzling Demko: Goalkeeper’s Heroics Secure Vancouver Canucks Victory Over Kings
In his best goalkeeping effort of the year, Thatcher Demko made 23 saves and his NHL-leading 32nd win. If there was a signature moment for him, it came with a miraculous glove save on Alex Turcotte during a 2-on-1 breakaway in the first minutes of the third period. Coach Rick Tocchet could not help but praise. Tocchet said about Demko, “What an unreal save.” So, it’s going to be up on tonight’s TV channel, and I guess for the rest of the month too.”
Quinn Hughes also made a significant contribution, marked by his passing, that made Pettersson’s goal possible. Hughes put himself in the company of good NHL defensemen. Which includes Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr, and Ray Bourque, by recording three seasons with 60 assists in a row.
Although the Kings lost the match, they are tied with Vegas for the third position in the Pacific Division. Trevor Moore put the only goal past the net for Los Angeles, and their goalie, Cam Talbot made 29 stops.
Upcoming Games
On Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks will square off against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Kings will have their home game against the Ottawa Senators on the very same day. The temperature rises as both teams compete for notches in the latter part of the NHL season.
