A few days before the start of a new MLB season, teams are preparing strategies to win the title. At the same time, MLB seeks to improve each season with changes to strengthen the show. These changes are in the rules; some are against them and others in favor, generating an internal and external debate.
So the new focus of discussion is MLB’s consideration of reducing the maximum of 13 pitchers per team to 12 for the 2025 season. As reported by Fox Sports in a recently published article, MLB is looking to give more prominence to the starters.
If accepted, teams will stop overusing their relievers and should rely more on their starters.

Pitcher Max Scherzer believes MLB must return starting pitching to prominence. He believes he has learned hard lessons on the road to pitching in deep games. He confesses that he became a better player when he missed up to 3 times through the lineup.
For Jameson Taillon, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, the appeal of the starters has been somewhat lost in MLB. Jameson explains that in his childhood, they used to pick games because of the starters’ duel.
However, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts does not agree with this consideration. For Dave, having 12 pitchers can overload the bullpens and affect the performance of all teams.
Demand from an early age
For many, it is necessary to raise the bar from the Minor Leagues to not surprise the MLB. Pitcher Jameson Taillon agrees because there are cases in which pitchers have not done more than four chapters. For Jameson, his development has focused on pitches. Because it’s more about pitch counts and then resting properly.
Nowadays you can see starters coming into the MLB but being pulled from their openings, before appearing for the third time. Because statistically hitters show success in their third appearance with the same pitcher.
