Spencer Dinwiddle is “very” happy to return to Dallas, Texas. Before he returned to the Dallas Mavericks for a second stint, Dinwiddle, 31, purchased a home for his family in Dallas, despite being around 1,445 miles away in Los Angeles, California, as a part of the Los Angeles Lakers. He played just one season in Los Angeles on a one-year deal worth the league minimum.
Dinwiddle purchased a home for his family and then signed a one-year, $3.3 million free-agent contract with the Mavericks. Dinwiddle told the Mavericks organization, “Ironically, six months ago I bought my family a home in Dallas … I get to now live in it, so it’s fun.”
Dinwiddle might’ve predicted the future, as things somehow worked out for him. He first played for the Mavericks from 2023 to 2024. The Washington Wizards traded him and forward Davis Bertans to Dallas for power forward and center Kristaps Porzingis and a projected 2022 second-round pick. Spencer Dinwiddle was a fan favorite in his first stint in Dallas, and still a favorite in his second stint in the city. Dinwiddle’s return to Dallas delighted Dallas Mavericks fans, despite his previous comments about the Mavericks’ organization before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers on February 10, 2024.
Dinwiddle told the Mavericks, “I had a decision between the Lakers and the Mavs – and a couple of other (teams) – but mainly those two … Any time I’ve kind of been knocked down, I try to take the hard path, and not necessarily make it hard on myself, but just in terms of that growth. It was funny because both LA and Dallas fan bases kind of thought it was all about them, but it really wasn’t. It was really man versus bully.”
“Given what happened with Brooklyn and being in the top five in multiple categories – points and threes and assists – to kind of have that exit play out like that, obviously it sucked, hurt, all those other things. So, the perspective is man versus bully. It really had nothing to do with either fan base, to be honest.”
Dinwiddle might not play for the Dallas Mavericks for a long time. However, Dinwiddle’s return can help the Mavericks fill a major hole at guard off the bench. Dinwiddle’s services include defense, shooting, passing, finishing, and attacking.
Dallas Mavericks Vie for Spencer Dinwiddle
The Dallas Mavericks reportedly vied for Spencer Dinwiddle — and Dinwiddle ultimately chose to play a second stint for the Mavericks. Dinwiddle’s decision could’ve been made for a variety of reasons. Aside from his family’s new home in Dallas, he might’ve wanted to play for the Mavericks again, as the Mavericks’ current roster is arguably the most talented in recent years.
Dinwiddle told the Mavericks, “Probably the most consistent basketball I’ve played has been in a Mavs jersey … The farthest I’ve gone in the playoffs – the Western Conference Finals – was in a Mavs jersey.”
Dinwiddle’s recent statement is arguably accurate. He’s now with a “very” deep and talented team in the Dallas Mavericks. He hasn’t achieved as much success in his previous stints with the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers.
Spencer Dinwiddle Prepares for Dallas Mavericks
Spencer Dinwiddle is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard who’s about to play with a deep and multi-talented Dallas Mavericks backcourt that includes Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Quentin Grimes, Jaden Hardy, and Dante Exum. However, Dinwiddle knows he likely won’t get the same playing time as in the past.
Dinwiddle told the Mavericks, “I played with Kyrie in Brooklyn … I’m familiar with him, and obviously I’ve familiar with Luka (as his teammate) for a couple of years. Klay, I’ve never played with. Klay is a top two-three shooter of all time, which is sensation. Any time you’re top two or three in anything in the world, you’re amazing.”
“On the better teams I’ve been on, it’s all about just kind of plugging in the gaps. If it needs to be a little bit of a (faster) pace — if Luka is tired or something — maybe I’ll do that. If it needs to be spot-up shooting because Kyrie is cooking, then I’ll do that. If Klay’s cooking and I need to be passing him the ball, then you do that. If all three are rolling and you need to play defense, you even saw that with the Lakers. In the last 15-20 games of the season, they relied on me as the end of the game stopper. Just doing whatever it takes to win.”
Dinwiddle may not get the same amount of playing time like in the past, but he seems to be prepared to adapt to whatever amount of minutes and whatever role given to him by the Dallas Mavericks. Dinwiddle’s potential impact playing alongside Doncic, Irving, etc., can help him maintain his NBA career.
