Philadelphia Eagles’ Defensive Struggles: Fixable Problems After Buccaneers

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have faced some tough challenges this season, particularly on defense. After a strong performance against the New Orleans Saints, they faltered badly against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In this article, we’ll explore what went wrong, how it affects the team, and why these issues are fixable.

A Tale of Two Games

In their game against the Saints, the Eagles defense was excellent. They did not allow the Saints over 219 yards nor gain more than 12 first downs. Derek Carr, the quarterback for the Saints, could only muster 14 completions on 25 attempts for just 142 yards. But one week later, against the Buccaneers, everything was different. The Philadelphia Eagles saw 445 yards of offense and 29 first downs given up as Baker Mayfield proved the way in throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns. So what went amiss?

The other huge problem was that the Philadelphia Eagles’ cornerbacks had soft coverage. They often would line up as far off as 8 to 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, really giving the Buccaneers a lot of easy completions. This led to quick first-half touchdowns. Although some adjustments were made and the Bucs only scored nine points in the second half, the damage was already done. As defensive coordinator Vic Fangio pointed out, they have the skill sets to play press coverage, but they didn’t do a good job of doing that against the Bucs.

Missed Tackles Hurt the Defense

Missed tackles were another critical problem. Fangio explained the team missed at least 15 tackles in the game. Many players left their feet too early or failed to wrap up. Better tackling would improve the defense and coverage overall.

The Philadelphia Eagles have grounds to be smiling because the issues are fixable. The team will have a week bye to regroup and fix its defense. If they had time to review what went wrong, they could lose coverage, tackle better, and condition for extreme weather. Fangio will be instrumental in giving them an idea of what it needs since the players know what went wrong.

Building Trust and Communication

Effective communication on the field is key to any defense. The Philadelphia Eagles must make sure that everyone on the field agrees when they’re making adjustments in a game. As they improve their communication, they’ll avoid situations where players are out of place or reluctant to commit to plays. Building trust in the defensive unit will be an important part of helping them move ahead.

Now, it’s time to wrap up the story of the Philadelphia Eagles, who undoubtedly have defensive failures. Little wonder this, given what they had to go through while facing the Buccaneers. However, with a little bit of time and exercise, these problems can easily be put to bed. With better coverage, improved tackling, and countering the challenges brought upon the team by the weather, it’s clear that the Philadelphia Eagles will learn and get better prepared for the next round. And as fans, we remain optimistic that they will rise to the challenges at hand and show us their much-needed resilience.
