Georgia RB Trevor Etienne Suspended In Week 1

Trevor Etienne

In a shocking twist less than a couple of hours before kickoff, Georgia running back Trevor Etienne will not dress for the Bulldogs’ Week 1 contest against Clemson. This announcement comes on the heels of his arrest last week for DUI and reckless driving. There was some thought that perhaps Etienne might face some sort of disciplinary action, but an announcement wasn’t made until the game day itself.

Trevor Etienne, a transfer from Florida, has proved to be an important inclusion in the Georgia roster. His off-field problems have now reached a boiling point, earning him a one-game suspension. Georgia policy concerning DUI offenses requires that any player involved in such an offense faces a suspension of at least 10 percent of the regular season. This year, it means a necessary one-game suspension.

This is a big blow for the Bulldogs, as Trevor Etienne was very active last season with the Gators, running 753 yards and eight touchdowns. He was expected to be one of the big guns at Georgia. His absence will be felt more now that the team faces challenges in the running back department.

 Injuries Continue

Adding to Georgia’s woes, another workhorse running back, Roderick Robinson II is out due to a turf toe injury. In his recovery process, the remaining running backs would be hugely relied upon by the Bulldogs. This places even greater pressure on the team going into this important game.

With Etienne and Robinson gone, the workload now falls to redshirt sophomore Branson Robinson and junior tailback Cash Jones. Branson Robinson, who also struggled through a season-ending injury last year, will be forced to shoulder much more of the load this season. The same goes for Cash Jones, probably.

A Season of Adjustments

The injuries—now the trials and tribulations for Georgia’s football program in this regard—just keep piling on. It is going to be a year that really will put this team’s depth and resilience to the test. Without two of its most important players, the coaching staff will have to make some serious strategic changes to find new avenues to utilize the talent at their disposal.

While dismal, Georgia’s coaching staff and players will likely remain optimistic. Roster depth combined with this team’s strong leadership will carry them through the early loss. The Bulldogs have the potential to adjust and continue on with the rest of their season.

Injuries and suspensions are part of the game, but they’re always that different obstacle nobody prepares for. Georgia’s tough break is losing Trevor Etienne for the opener, yet at the same time, that represents an opportunity for other guys to take over. As the season progresses, the Bulldogs will want to recover from such blows and show their resiliency on the field.
