Las Vegas Raiders Shockingly Release DT Byron Young

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders made waves Wednesday afternoon. Defensive tackle Byron Young was a third-round pick in 2023. Now he’s off the team completely.

Young played his college days at the University of Alabama but only recorded four tackles in six career games. He marks another potential draft failure from the Josh McDaniels-Dave Ziegler. The duo drafted four defensive tackles in two seasons, but only one remains on the roster(Nesta Jade Silvera).

Nobody Saw This Coming

This was the only shocking move to come from Las Vegas in the last week. Nobody expected the Las Vegas Raiders to part ways with Young after just one season. It’s been rumored that the team should part ways with former 2023 draft-classmate first-round draft pick Tyree Wilson, though he’s hoping to continue being mentored by superstar Maxx Crosby.

The sudden switch-up happened less than 24 hours after Young was named to the final roster as well. It goes to show that no matter what, rosters can change in an instant in the NFL. The Raiders are still looking to add playmakers, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Las Vegas Raiders Struggle On Draft Day

It seems like few things in life are more certain than seeing the Las Vegas Raiders struggle on draft day. It seems like ever since 1999, no team has managed to botch their draft picks more than the “Silver & Black.” It doesn’t matter if it’s the old man version of the great Al Davis, Jon Gruden-Mike Mayock, or McDaniels-Ziegler making the final decisions.

Young was expected to be the defensive tackle of the future for a team that has struggled with an interior rush since the retirements of Richard Seymour and Tommie Kelly. Instead, Young will hope to continue his career elsewhere and build on what he’s started. As a third-round pick who was only drafted last year, he should garner interest elsewhere.

Where Young Can Go From Here

It should not be a surprise if Young ends up on an AFC West rival. The AFC West tends to be a blood feud where the former players of one team find their way to another team in the same division. With two of the Las Vegas Raiders’ first five games being on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, Young will likely end up on either squad.

Another rival coming off a very eventful game that could sign Young is the San Francisco 49ers. They’ve had prior success with former Las Vegas Raiders defensive linemen in recent seasons such as Celin Ferrell and Maurice Hurst. Another team that could take a look at Young is the Chicago Bears, although the team may not need to add to their pass rush.
