New details have emerged on the Dallas Mavericks recruiting Klay Thompson, according to Last Word On Sports. Thompson, 34, previously played for the Golden State Warriors from 2011 to 2024. Thompson’s departure from Golden State ended the Splash Brothers’ era in a melancholy manner, to say the least.
As the Warriors search for ways to upgrade their existing roster, the Mavericks look to win their second NBA championship in 2025. Thompson’s signing a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavs shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the Mavs’ recent success makes them a desirable team for free agents. But there’s more to the Thompson ascent in Dallas than meets the eye.
Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers
According to Last Word On Sports, Klay Thompson “wears his emotions.”
The Los Angeles Lakers would’ve been Klay’s best bet on paper. Klay could’ve replicated his father Mychal’s success in Los Angeles and experienced sentimental feelings with Lakers fans and reporters. But he reportedly signed with the Dallas Mavericks for a guaranteed starting lineup spot. The Golden State Warriors benched him during the 2023-24 NBA season.
Thompson reportedly joined the Mavericks for a better chance at winning another ring, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Klay Thompson Wants to Increase His Chances
Klay Thompson reportedly wanted to increase his chances of winning another NBA championship. Thompson won four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. Thompson’s signing with the Dallas Mavericks made sense.
On July 15, 2024, Shams Charania appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show.” Charania told the host Pat McAfee, a former NFL punter who played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2016, “Klay Thompson had a larger offer on the table from the Lakers. He believed the Dallas Mavericks were his best opportunity to win another championship.”
Charania’s comments about Thompson were accurate and realistic. The Mavericks have been achieving success under head coach Jason Kidd, a former NBA point guard who played from 1994 to 2013.
Klay Thompson’s Respect for Kyrie Irving
Klay Thompson’s respect for veteran guard Kyrie Irving was reportedly a significant factor in his decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Irving, 32, is arguably the most polarizing player in the NBA, but he appears to get along with Thompson.
NBA insider Marc Stein appeared on the “DLLS Mavs Podcast” and told host Kevin Gray Jr., “I covered the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup where they were teammates, and you could tell then that Klay had a real admiration for Kyrie.”
Stein added, “There is no question, Kyrie Irving is one of the players and peers that Klay Thompson really, really, really respects… That was a huge factor for the Mavs… Because it’s always great when players can be the advocate for your free agency push.”
