The Detroit Tigers continued their winning ways on a rain-soaked evening at Comerica Park on Tuesday, utilizing a combination of good pitching and powerful hitting in a 6-2 victory. The victory was the Tigers’ fifth straight and they have now won 12 of their last 15 ball games. It also moves the Tigers over to the .500 mark at 67-66. It marks the first time since the 2016 season that the Tigers have climbed over the .500 mark at any point after the All-Star break.
With the Twins also losing on Tuesday, it moved the Tigers to a realistically attainable 5.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Will they be able to close the gap even more in the season’s final month?
Bombs Away

Once again the key to the Tigers’ success on Tuesday night was their burgeoning young offense. After failing to get anything going against 38-year-old right-hander Johnny Cueto through the first three innings, they finally broke through in the fourth as Matt Vierling smacked a run-scoring double and Kerry Carpenter followed with an RBI single that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
After the Angels rallied back to tie it in the top half of the fifth inning, Jake Rogers clobbered a solo home run over the outstretched glove of Kevin Pillar in center field to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish.
They added onto that lead in the sixth inning as Riley Greene blasted a leadoff 425-foot bomb to center off of Cueto and two batters later Carpenter followed with a 425-foot blast to right-center that increased their advantage to 6-2. Carpenter finished the night 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and is now hitting .284/.340/.589 with 13 long balls and 40 RBI on the season.
Brant Hurter Victorious in First MLB Start
While Brant Hurter has pitched well as a bulk reliever out of the Tigers’ bullpen this season, he made his first actual big-league start on Tuesday night against the Angels. He showed some jitters in the opening inning, as he allowed a leadoff double to Taylor Ward and a run-scoring single to Nolan Schanuel. He also balked – moving runners up to second and third base with two outs in the inning – before battling back to strike out Anthony Rendon to end the threat.
He settled in nicely afterward though and only allowed one additional run the rest of the way. All told, he surrendered two runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out four batters over his five frames. Hurter got just four whiffs on 80 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll carry an impressive 3.57 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and a 21/3 K/BB ratio (22 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Red Sox.

Matt Manning (lat) has progressed to throwing two bullpen sessions per week and could be an option to return to the team’s rotation at some point in September.
