The signing of Dalvin Cook, a veteran running back, by the Dallas Cowboys to their practice squad has been the talk of the town. This forms an important part of their strategy as the team prepares for the 2024 NFL season. Cook’s addition to the practice squad brings depth and experience to the Cowboys, who already feature running backs such as Ezekiel Elliott and Deuce Vaughn. His possibility to make an impact this season has created excitement among fans and analysts.
Dalvin Cook Joins the Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys aren’t done making noise this preseason. The agency for veteran running back Dalvin Cook announced he will be signing onto the practice squad of the Cowboys. Cook visited Dallas on Tuesday, and all went well as he even looked to be in great shape. This practice squad addition comes with the Cowboys finalizing their 53-man roster, including running backs Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn, with fullback Hunter Luepke.
Being on the practice squad means Cook will not be on the active roster immediately but is there for call-ups, should they see fit. He can join their 46-man gameday roster for the opening game of the season on September 8 against the Browns. Players on the practice squad can be called up to the main roster three times before needing to sign permanently. This setup allows flexibility for the Dallas Cowboys while Cook gets a shot to prove himself.
Cook’s Recent Performance
Dalvin Cook, 29, made appearances with both the Jets and the Ravens last season. In 15 appearances with the Jets, Cook ran for 214 yards. After joining the Ravens in January, he added 23 rushing yards in their wild-card win over the Texans and did not see action in their divisional-round loss to the Chiefs. So, based on these scant opportunities, Cook brings experience and a documented performance level into the Cowboys’ folds.
Dalvin Cook brings some gaudy stats to the Cowboys. His 5,238 rushing yards over the last five seasons rank fourth in the NFL during that span, behind only Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, and Nick Chubb. The highlights of Cook’s career include a stretch of four straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 2019-2022 for the Vikings. His best season was 2020, when he ran for 1,557 yards and 16 touchdowns.
He will find a few familiar faces in Dallas. The Dallas Cowboys have added linebacker Eric Kendricks and defensive tackle Linval Joseph to their roster, both former Vikings. This may prove to be a plus in the orientation of Cook with his new team and system. Having some teammates with whom he shares a history could be helpful as he finds his place with the Dallas Cowboys lineup.
Next Move
Come the new season, Dalvin Cook and the Dallas Cowboys are going to be everybody’s eyes. The move of the team placing him on the practice squad first gives them an idea about the fitting and performance as they manage the roster correctly. As the season progresses, the role and contribution will go a long way to determining how successful the Dallas Cowboys are. Cook’s influence and impact that he could bring into the team will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike.
