Indianapolis Colts TE Jelani Woods Placed On IR Due To Toe Injury

Indianapolis Colts

It can’t be anything but the ultimate headache when the very player that the Indianapolis Colts truly need to be able to live up to all the hype is about to suffer yet another season-ending injury. This is a colossal setback for a team eager to show precisely what Jelani Woods can do. The Indianapolis Colts announced this week that they are going to place Woods on injured reserve, which will cost him the rest of the season. This is somewhat surprising because it didn’t seem like the turf toe injury to Woods was that bad.

Hopes were that he may even return this year after surgery, yet the Indianapolis Colts used their two return-designated IR spots on defensive end Samson Ebukam and linebacker Cameron McGrone instead. This isn’t the first time that injury misfortune has found Woods. Going into last season, he was supposed to be a big factor. Instead, his season ended up on the sideline. It started with Woods injuring his hamstring during organized team activities. Woods then reinjured the hamstring, followed by the other hamstring. The injuries cost him his season.

A 2022 draftee with an exciting blend of size, 6-7 and 259 pounds, and speed, 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Woods flashed as a rookie, catching 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to stretch defenses and make big plays was indeed palpable, something on which the Indianapolis Colts were excited to continue building.

Training Camp Struggles

It has been a tough preseason for the optimism surrounding Woods. He has largely struggled to make an impact, often playing with the offense’s second and third teams. The waiting in line now as the tight-end veterans take their turns, Mo Alie-Cox and Kylen Granson, leaves Woods mostly standing on the sideline.

With Alie-Cox and Granson both being unrestricted free agents after this season, there may be an opportunity for Woods to rekindle that value. His size and athleticism do make him a weapon, but the Colts can just no longer hope that he works through these injuries and still ends up finding his way back.

Looking Forward

For Woods, this season-ending injury is yet one more long story of a career that has seen him dogged by adversity. The path of rehabilitation is now of paramount importance, and his future with the Indianapolis Colts will consequently hinge on how well he can bounce back. Circumstances such as these underscore the difficulties facing NFL players, no matter how great their talent and potential.

This is a blow for the Indianapolis Colts, placing Jelani Woods on the injured reserve at a time when his season could have sparked into life. As the team navigates this season, they are hoping that the personable star will finally be able to stay healthy and move into the promise he showed in his rookie season.
