Denmark international Matt O’Riley has transferred to Brighton, marking a record-breaking fee for a Scottish club. Matt O’Riley, who originally joined Celtic from MK Dons in January 2022 for 1.5 million euros, made a significant impact last season with 19 goals and 18 assists. This transfer surpasses the previous record of 25 million euros, set when Jota moved from Celtic to Al Ittihad last summer. Celtic had turned down five offers from Atalanta for Matt O’Riley, with the highest being 21.5 million euros plus add-ons.
The 23-year-old, under contract with Celtic until 2027, also attracted a 20 million euro bid from Atletico Madrid in January, which was rejected. Brighton’s summer spending spree continues with Matt O’Riley’s addition, following their club-record 40 million euros purchase of forward Georginio Rutter and the signing of midfielder Brajan Gruda for around 25 million euros.

Matt O’Riley has signed a five-year contract with Brighton after moving from Celtic for a reported 25 million euros plus add-ons, pending international clearance. If confirmed, this would set a new transfer record for a player sold by a Scottish club. The 23-year-old Denmark midfielder made over 100 appearances for Celtic since joining from MK Dons in January 2022, scoring 27 goals and contributing to three Scottish Premiership titles.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler praised Matt O’Riley, stating, “He excels in a specialized position, with a strong ability to occupy and attack the right spaces, often making well-timed deep runs. He enjoys pushing forward and attacking the opponent’s penalty area, but also possesses strong defensive instincts. This balance makes him a unique player. He has a great character and a strong ambition to succeed, which is very important to us.”
What Matt O’Riley said
“It’s tough,” the former Fulham youth player shared in a video interview on Brighton’s official website. People might not realize how big the club is until they experience it. Celtic is a real family club, and I felt welcomed right from the start. The passion of the fans is something truly unique, something I had never encountered before. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
It’s still a bit emotional to talk about because I have so many great memories, but it felt like the right time for a new challenge. I leave with only fond memories. Celtic helped me mature as a person. You have to win every single game. If you don’t, even against strong teams like Rangers, it’s seen as a disaster. That relentless winning mentality has prepared me for this next challenge, and I hope to bring some of that with me.”
Matt O’Riley expressed relief that his future was finally settled after a summer of uncertainty.
“It definitely took a while,” he admitted. “The last couple of weeks were a bit stressful, to be honest, because talks had been going on for a few months, but I’m just really happy to be here now.”
