Steelers Jaylen Warren Excited to Return Week 1 After Injury

Jaylen Warren of the Pittsburg Steelers set to return week 1 after preseason injury.

Pittsburg Steelers running back Jaylen Warren suffered a grade 1 hamstring injury in the second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. He feels confident in his resilience to push through the injury and make it to the first season game against the Atlanta Falcons.

What can he expect from his recovery?

“It’s nothing crazy,” says Warren, who strained the same hamstring in the spring.

Official reports confirm Warren will play during week 1. He’s making a healthy recovery. Last was his most productive year yet, with 784 yards rushing, four touchdowns, and 61 catches behind the line of scrimmage. The Steelers’ offense plans to continue running the ball and hopes their young prospect will finish the upcoming season at 100%.

Warren has a history of hamstring injuries, including an injury in week 12 of his 2022 rookie season. He dealt with a grade 2 hamstring strain and only had to miss one game. The Steelers will want to strengthen their rushing attack and protect themselves from any holes in their offense. Warren’s hamstring is an area of concern for the Steeler’s offense. Given Warren’s uncertainty, the Steelers will rely on Najee Harris and Coradelle Paterson, with Harris picking up most of the slack. The Steelers face a problem in moments of Warren’s absence. However, Warren’s health has been consistent enough to rely on him as any other starting running back in the league.

What does this mean for the future of the Steelers’ rushing offense?

Steelers Aim to Continue Competitive Rushing Offense into 2024 Season

Last season, Warren averaged 5.3 yards per attempt (third among RBs with 100+ attempts), breaking 27 tackles in 2023 (fourth in the NFL). Najee Harris averaged 4.1 yards while breaking 30 (second in the NFL). Harris’ wheelhouse is short-yard situations, while one of Warren’s four touchdowns was a 74-yard touchdown run.

Harris plays more on early downs, while Warren plays on passing downs. They traded off snaps a few plays at a time in the preseason game, a strategy that is consistent in the Steelers’ rushing offense.

The Steelers’ competitive running game is reliant on Warren’s health. Without the balance of a wildcard running back topped with a short-gain strength rusher in Harris, we might not see the same top-rushing offense again this year. Their starter must be healthy and as strong as ever. He will want to break his records this season. These two runners combined kept defenses on their toes, keeping their stats at the top of the league. Whether or not the Steelers are serious Super Bowl contenders is up for debate, but with Warren healthy, they will slow down all their competition.
