Basketball Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki recently said that he hopes Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic joins Dallas Mavericks point Guard Luka Doncic in Dallas, Texas, according to CBS Sports.
Despite hailing from different Eastern European countries, Jokic, 29, and Doncic, 25, are arguably the top two players in the NBA. As an arguably biased observer, Nowitzki, 46, would prefer that Jokic leave Denver, Colorado, and the Nuggets for Doncic and the Mavericks. Here’s why Nowitzki prefers a Jokic to Dallas move.
Dirk Nowitzki Comments On Nikola Jokic
CBS Sports said that Dirk Nowitzki isn’t exactly an unbiased observer, but he brought up an interesting point about the possibility of Nikola Jokic joining Luka Doncic as a Dallas Mavericks teammate someday.
According to Eurohoops’ Cesare Milanti, Nowitzki told reporters, “I hope that would be in Dallas … I’m not sure if that will ever happen, but obviously, both are two of the best players in the world, if not the best players in the world.”
Nowitzki’s answer appeared to be optimistic, but realistic, as a Jokic to Dallas move would be great but unrealistic. The Joker has mentioned in the past that he didn’t want to leave Denver as he likes it in the “Mile High City” and he thinks the Denver Nuggets are a great organization. Also, Doncic has emphasized the importance of not overlooking the injuries the Mavericks have dealt with, including himself, Kyrie Irving, and Dereck Lively II.
Nowitzki’s Tenure With Dallas
Dirk Nowitzki’s 21-year tenure with the Dallas Mavericks might’ve played a role in his recent opinion about Nikola Jokic joining Luka Doncic in Dallas, Texas. Nowitzki played for the Mavericks from 1998 to 2019, with the last season of his being Doncic’s rookie season in Dallas.
Nowitzki said, “They both have a great relationship with each other, they respect each other and like each other genuinely. They spend time with each other. I’m not sure, but of course, we want Luka in Dallas as long as we can. Hopefully, he finishes his career there, but I love Jokic’s game, how he plays the game with passion, and the skill level as a big is unbelievable. They’re both incredible players.”
Nowitzki’s statement was eye-opening, as Doncic and Jokic might be rivals on the court, but they’re friendly with each other off the court. If this happens, Luka Magic and The Joker would make a great duo for the Dallas Mavericks.
Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic On The Same Team
Dirk Nowitzki might or might not be correct. But this past weekend, professional basketball fans got a chance to see Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic on the same team in Goran Dragic’s farewell game in Ljubljana, Slovenia, which is Doncic’s hometown and where Nowitzki shared his opinion.
In case you missed it, Doncic and Jokic started alongside Bogdan Bogdanovic, Luis Scola, and Robin Lopez as part of Team Luka. Team Luka faced off against Team Gogi, which featured Dragic, Steve Nash, and Nikola Vucevic.
