Jessica Pegula is Not Happy at the US Open 2024

Jessica Pegula at Cincinnati Open 2024 - Day 8

Jessica Pegula is arguably the most in-form player on the WTA Tour. The American is the sixth seed at the US Open. Born in Buffalo, New York, Jessica Pegula has had an impressive performance on the hard court this summer.

She successfully defended her Canadian Open title after defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The 30-year-old performed admirably at the Cincinnati Open as a finalist. But these results still won’t make Jessica Pegula happy entering her first match against fellow American, Shelby Rogers, on Tuesday, August 27 at 9 PM ET.

A Truly Hard Time for Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula will be a very tricky challenge for Shelby Rogers. The 31-year-old player is seeking to cause a major upset in her final on-court memories before retiring. Pegula couldn’t hide her sadness to face her first match in New York.

It is not easy for Jessica Pegula to see people her age retiring. Shelby Rogers is set to hang up her racket shortly. Rogers had reached her career-high ranking of 30 back in August 2022. She currently sits 356th in the WTA rankings ahead of the US Open. But Jessica Pegula, the American number two, is excited to see Rogers in the US Open first round. “Being able to end your career at the US Open and play each other, it’s pretty amazing when you look at it that way,” she said at the press conference.

Another American who follows Rogers’ steps is Danielle Collins. The 30-year-old is set to retire from tennis at the end of the season. She is entering the US Open as an 11th seed.

Jessica Pegula and US Open Balls

How Jessica Pegula succumbed to the blistering power of Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati is not arguable. She was battling everything from the wind, different balls, and incredibly quick court. But Pegula showed she managed to control her matches when others couldn’t.

US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster confirmed that all players would be using the same ball during last year’s event. Jessica Pegula is also preparing for a change in balls. She knew she just needed to make any adjustments she needed for every ball used on the court.

Jessica Pegula to Break Her Curse This Year

Jessica Pegula’s US Open historical journey was not considered good. Although she had a good run on hard courts, Pegula had not moved beyond the quarter-final round. With back-to-back finals in WTA 1000 events in North America, Jessica Pegula is still the hot favorite for US Open Glory. However, Pegula’s quest for the elusive major semi-final looks in its shape to be completed over the next fortnight. If she is lucky enough to pass through Rogers, she might see Britain’s Emma Raducanu or another American fellow Sofia Kenin in the second round.
