With a preseason record of 3-0, the Jaguars are on the verge of something special. Jaguars’ Tough Roster Decisions
It’s ultimately General Manager Trent Baalke and Head Coach Doug Pederson who will have to make very tough decisions regarding keeping the best on this football team. Stars like Trevor Lawrence and Josh Allen will not be cut, but a lot of really talented players are going to fight for their spots, thereby making it one of the deepest rosters the Jaguars have fielded in years.
The Jaguars have talent nearly at every position, particularly wide receiver, linebacker, safety, and defensive line. That talent eventually translates to good players getting cut. Coach Pederson said that if a football team has to cut talented players, it is a sign of the strength of the team. On August 25, the Jaguars cut ten players from their roster as part of the reduction process. The ten players included defensive end Raymond Johnson and wide receiver Seth Williams.
Notable Cuts and Surprises
One of the more surprising moves was releasing wide receiver Denzel Mims, who ended the preseason with just one catch for seven yards. He could not contribute to special teams, and that was the nail in his coffin. Other bigger names include linebacker Andrew Parker Jr. and cornerback Tevaughn Campbell. As mentioned earlier, the team is looking to keep players who are going to give them their best chance at winning.
They’re also looking to the future. On August 21, the Jaguars signed quarterback E.J. Perry to add depth after backup quarterback C.J. Beathard suffered an injury in his groin. The addition of Perry brought security to a key position heading into the regular season.
