Bangladesh Thrashes Pakistan with Record Win, Mushfiqur's Heroics Shine

Mushfiqur Rahim’s 191 on the fourth day gave the Bangladesh bowling unit a lot of confidence, and they used it to their advantage to bowl out Pakistan for 146 on the fifth, handing them their fifth defeat in a run of nine home Tests without a victory. While Bangladesh’s maiden Test victory against Pakistan, a ten-wicket victory in Rawalpindi, was an uncommon one away from home.

Pakistan hasn’t won a Test at home since February 2021 against South Africa. In the previous seven years, they had only won two Test matches abroad. The final day was all about destroying the home team’s lineup and winning if the preceding day was about gradually tightening their hold on the game. The ball began to turn more than it did on Saturday, with some uneven bounce, and the fast bowlers dismissed three of the top four hitters. Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz shared the last seven wickets.

Bangladesh’s Easy Chase

Bangladesh’s Shakib stifled with his stump-to-stump lines from both sides of the wicket. Whereas, Nahid Rana, a young fast bowler, picked up the pace to almost 150 kmph to trap Babar Azam. Also, Mehidy hit with his quick off-breaks to frequently create tight situations and possibilities to take wickets. Following a second session in which Pakistan, mostly led by Mohammad Rizwan’s 51, set Bangladesh only 30 to win. Thus, Bangladesh easily chased down the runs in 6.3 overs.

The score was 28 for 2, but Babar Azam could have made it to 28 for 3, angling his second delivery away from him to the keeper. Litton Das lost the opportunity to his right, and Babar made it through two. Stepping out to negate Shakib’s turn, Saud Shakeel failed to do so and was left stumped for a duck.

Just over three overs were remaining before noon when a patient Abdullah Shafique threw his wicket away. Bangladesh made a reckless and unnecessary stroke over mid-off, giving Shadman Islam the upper hand at the backward point. Shadman made a fine grab at slip to his left as Mehidy pulled his edge and dragged Agha Salman forward with a taunting off-break two balls later.

Rizwan’s Gritty Half-Century

In between, Rizwan used his strong hands to smash four boundaries on either side of the wicket, eliminating a significant portion of the 50-run deficit as he left the field.  With a hat-trick of fours, he hit a little fatigued Nahid, and in the next over, he slog-swept for another boundary, bringing the total runs scored off two overs to 26.

Once Shaheen Shah Afridi was caught in front by a Mehidy delivery that barely bounced, he was obliged to control his instincts after Salman’s dismissal and farmed the strike after lunch. At that point, Pakistan was 111 for 7, still six behind. They immediately had the upper hand, but Rizwan took charge of establishing some type of lead with his tenth Test half-century after Naseem Shah had given a catch to midwicket.

He was dismissed for chopping on Mehidy, who also trapped Mohammad Ali to finish the innings, thanks to his rough style and slog sweeps. Then, Shadman and Zakir Hasan made sure Bangladesh crossed the finish line unharmed. Zakir scored the winning runs with a sweep down to the empty fine-leg fence, hitting three fours in his 14 balls.
