There will be a chance to make MLB history this Monday at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays match up for a doubleheader. Danny Jansen, the Boston Red Sox catcher, formerly a Toronto Blue Jay, is scheduled to take on his old team in his new home ballpark. Jansen could go down in history as the first player in the MLB to be listed on the box score for both teams. How, you ask? Let’s find out.
Toronto Blue Jays v. Boston Red Sox

Imagine a muggy June afternoon in Fenway Park, Kutter Crawford is scheduled to go up against Yariel Rodriguez. The Boston Red Sox fans are not quite filling the stadium today as summer has just begun and it is still early in the season. Top of the second and Danny Jansen is up, he fouls off the pitch from Crawford. Rain started sprinkling over the city and a rain delay was called at the top of the second inning in the middle of Jansen’s at-bat as the Blue Jays catcher. Nearly two hours later, with a deluge of rain trampling over Boston, the umps suspended the game.
It is scheduled for Monday, August 26, to begin right where it left off, in the top of the second, with Jansen at bat for the Toronto Blue Jays. A good old-fashioned doubleheader, a real crowd-pleaser, but wait, isn’t he the catcher for the Boston Red Sox now?
Red Sox Acquire Danny Jansen July 27th
John Henry, Craig Breslow, and Brian O’Halloran all know how their farm system is outperforming this year but something needed to give. On July 27, the Red Sox gave up three prospects to the Blue Jays for Jansen. So this upcoming game on Monday makes Jansen, potentially, the first player in the MLB to be listed on both rosters. He could suit up twice, wild how the MLB can still surprise us after 121 years.
Alex Cora has made no mention of what Monday’s lineup will be as of yet. MLB rules say that a player is allowed, who was not on a team’s roster when there is a suspension of a game, to be a substitute when that game is resumed at the scheduled date. This means he could be listed in both box scores to play and we could watch one player play for two teams this Monday when the Boston Red Sox take on Toronto at home.
This has never happened in the MLB before and we are all hoping the Boston Red Sox decide to take the opportunity to make history. Ways that don’t jeopardize their chance at the playoffs but rather, fun, lighthearted ways to make history, like this one. Same player, both teams, same game. This could be a media frenzy that Red Sox Owner John Henry would eat up like an afternoon snack.
When Life Is Uncertain, Count On Baseball
What is true is that the Boston Red Sox are welcoming Jansen as a newer addition to the team. Currently, after 13 games Jansen is slashing .257/.366/.429 with five RBI and two home runs. He will be facing his old team for the first time since he has been traded. Like that isn’t weird enough for him, he is now up for the possibility of making it even weirder. Although it isn’t up to him, he remarked how he is just happy when he is on the roster for a game, always ready to play.
It is not definite that Jansen will put two uniforms in the same game next week, but what is definite is how exciting the Red Sox have been playing. The team is getting hot at the right time. Over the next two weeks, it is a make-or-break situation for our Beantown heroes. Coming home with a series win against Houston makes an impact on playoff positioning. All eyes will be on the Boston Red Sox and the incredibly talented AL East.
