Three-time MotoGP champion and Factory Racing team star Jorge Lorenzo has shared his views on how he thinks Marc Marquez is performing in the current 2024 Moto GP season. He has given some impressive performances over the years and Lorenzo feels that the after-effects of the major arm injury that he suffered in 2020 continue to plague him, and is still unable to nail the win.
Frequency and Extent of the 2020 Injury
In 2020 fans saw Marc Marquez’s career almost met a dramatic end when he crashed in the Spanish Grand Prix suffering a bad fracture on the arm. The injury took him four operations in two years, and thus he could not get back to full fitness. While he has since then more or less recovered his earlier prowess, the former MotoGP world champion now a TV analyst with DAZN notes that Marquez is not yet at optimal performance capacity because of that crash.
Jorge Lorenzo also noted the fact that Marc Marquez’s injury is still apparent, especially after watching the movements of the rider during the braking areas where is it seen that the injured part affects his speed. Season 2024 is also the first season that this talented rider has not clinched a victory and he is riding what many believe to be the best bike.
However, in 2023, he transferred to the Gresini team, riding on a year-old Ducati, and he was again near the front pack. After the race in Austria, Marc Marquez occupies fourth place in the championship with 192 points and four stages. Yet, a race win has remained out of their reach; the season has been all about Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin and their latest-spec Ducati GP24.

Lorenzo also nurtures the doubt that he would have dominated the championship had he been racing with the materials same as those used by Bagnaia or Martin. Marc Marquez, he said, was much better positioned before the injury, not to mention more technical and stronger than his rivals.
A fantastic fit on the GP23 has taken him to the factory Ducati next year where he will directly race against the two-time champion Bagnaia. Lorenzo thinks that though the opponents will be strong, Marc can still fight and clinch another championship, putting himself on a par with Valentino Rossi in the number of premier-class championships.
I don’t think we’ve seen Marc Marquez’s last title yet, possibly, but it’s not going to be easy for him to win a championship again, because he has two young riders [in front of him].
Conclusion
Jorge Lorenzo’s remarks add to the understanding of how Marc’s 2020 arm injury affected his MotoGP performance to date. Nonetheless, he has been assertive even in his campaigns for championship wins and the injury is still a barrier to him.
Nonetheless, it is hard to detract from the fact that this rider has natural talent and does not lack drive; these qualities put him in a good position to overcome these obstacles and become the owner of seven premier-class titles. When he signs for the Ducati team in 2025 the racing world will be keen to see whether Marquez can once again come back to the top despite the hurdles in his way.
